DIY stereo mic cord

OK, I have the capsules,  a soldring iron and the intention of making a cigar case capsule electret mic.  What I DON'T have is unlimited funds for cutting up 1/8 inch patch cords....I've cut two already and all I see are 2 wires shielded - not 4 wires as in the directions online.  So I don';t know what to connect to what.  If i can find the right cable I think I can do this - or at least give it a good try.  Thanks for the help.
