I saw Julian Bream in concert around 77! :)

My ultimate guitar hero is Rory Gallagher, though. There are loads of guitarists who are my favourites, and he's probably not the "best" out of them all (what is "best" anyway? :D), but he's invariably the one I get most enjoyment and inspiration out of, and it has been that way ever since I discovered him in 1980.

 ???.............difficult question.

I think for me there are 4 guitarists that have influenced me since taking up the guitar.

Jimi Hendrix:An inovator of the guitar, some amazing songs but felt he  was a bit messy live, maybe that was the drugs?
Lyndsey Buckingham: A favourite of mine has a sound all of his own and a great acoustic player.
Johnny Marr: More of an influence these days than any other, a great chordsmith, knows exactly what a song needs guitar wise, never seen overdoing it or showing off. I love listening to his work.

My biggest influence and winner (because there can be only one) is Mark Knopfler. He was the main influence in me taking up the guitar in the first place, he is capable of playing from rock to country style and excels in all he takes on. I still sometimes watch Dire Straits 'Live in 85' tour, he was an amazing player then, jaw droppingly good.
If I could play like anyone it would be him!

There's a clip somewhere on YT of Jimi Hendrix being interviewed on TV (USA?), and the interviewer asks Jimi what's it like to be rock's best guitar player, to which Jimi replies, 'You'd better ask Rory Gallagher'.
Priceless.
