My only concern is that it seems not to have discrete notes. Can anyone confirm this?

Yeah, I can confirm that - unlike the Stylophone, the Monotron uses a ribbon controller for pitch. And it's not clicky, like a Stylophone can be, nor as metallic (the Stylophone is the place for that sound).

That said, I wouldn't be too concerned because the "keyboard" layout on the Monotron is so small that I've never noticed a note being drastically off-pitch - and if it is, well that's part of the charm. ;D I'd recommend getting a DS stylus for playing it - makes it a lot easier to hit the notes and to slide into them. :)  Also, the filter is really nice.

DaSilvaSings and nick/odh also have one of these.

hmmmmm .... I may save up 'til i get 10x the price of the microkorg and get me a Roland SH-01 GAIA instead. Not by far as portable, but might fit in a large suitcase!

You need to de-couple that control freak part of you in favour of a looser style.  I've found it has limited applications but when I do use it, I've been please by what it adds.

Incidentally, KORG now have the Monotribe, which is like the Monotron's big brother, from what I can see...

The Monotribe looks really interesting. But I don't think it's available yet. SoundsLive says it's due in June.

Too bad it doesn't have MIDI or some other means of attaching an alternate controller. The ribbon controller seems a bit limiting to me.

The Korg microSAMPLER looks interesting too:

http://www.andertons.co.uk/synths-workstations/pid17113/cid619/korg-micro-sampler-keyboard.asp

It's £249.00 ($349.99 US) and available now. Runs on batteries and comes with built-in keyboard samples. It's even got MIDI in and out, so you could use a full-size keyboard if you prefer. Or connect its MIDI Out to your computer and use the microSAMPLER to control a soft synth. Seems like a pretty useful instrument for the money.
