Yep, the estimated 37 km is just over 23 miles - not quite "space". In the late 50s early 60s, USAF regarded 50 miles as "space", qualifying some test-pilots, eg those who flew the X-15, as "astronauts" (even before some of them actually became astronauts with NASA). Not sure what height is regarded as the boundary nowadays - but something balloon driven couldn't leave the atmosphere anyway...

Incredible! . . . . . . . . . . that they got their equipment back. If I were to put an iPhone, a digital camera, and a GPS system into a box and launch it into the atmosphere with a note saying please contact me, I wouldn't expect to ever see them again.
