tim and kenneth i think you re just judging the mainstream stuff that gets endless churned out, you guys should dig deeper and look further afield. if i based new music on what my kids listened to i would have the same opinion but there is more out there.

OK James... you got me there. These guys are amazing. It reminds of myself a little in the clear Beatles influence. Of course, they are a million times better at it than I am though, lol. Good shout though - they have a certain kind of magic.

I totally agree with ORH. There's some great music out there. Always has been always will be...but if you're judging today's music only by what is popular/mainstream then you are being ignorant. You gotta dig a bit. Every era has its shit music - there is just so much more of it now as is there more good music out there. There's just so much more music to choose from in general. It may take a little more work to find what you like but the pay off is worth it. Don't let your musical taste be stunted by getting bitter in your old age.

Here's what's in high rotation on my daughter's ipod playlist (she's 12):

...and of course The Beatles.

I did get the first two or three Regina Spektor albums. I think she's great, but every other f*cker tries to sing like her now. It's taken the shine and element of surprise off.

Oh... I do like Anthony and the Johnsons too... mordern(ish), lol

I'm not very familiar with Regina Spektor's work but on first listen she sounds like a clone of Tori Amos. Then again, Tori Amos reminds me a lot of Kate Bush. Maybe there is no new music. Everything's just a rehash of what's come before.  :-\

and what the f*ck is wrong with that? Some people try to sound like John Lennon or Liam Gallagher or Paul Weller!

of course it is, i'm sure the beatles where influenced by what came before them, but then they put their own twist on their influences.

one of the reasons i very rarely listen to heavy metal is that it sounds like stuff i heard years ago with no attempt at bringing any originality to the table. ok that might be a sweeping statement, but i find in general that genre is more concerned with commercial than artistic success, i am sure there are some exceptions.
but if someone puts a bit of themselves into their music it shines through and like i said earlier i cant wait to hear whats coming next.

I think part of the problem with modern music might not be the music but the listener. When I was in my teens and twenties, I used to lie on my bed and listen to an album in its entirety. The next day, I might listen to the same album again, and maybe again the next day, and so on. I really listened to the music and did nothing else. But as I got older, I found that I had no time for proper listening like I did when I was younger. Instead, music became a pleasant noise in the background while I did other things. I wasn't really listening anymore. The internet age has made matters worse because now I tend to listen to playlists of favourite songs from the past instead of albums.

Here's an interesting article on the subject:

I think I should try to make a point of listening to one whole album each week.

Ok, the eminem video was pure shit. My favorite part is when he punched a hole through a painting with no wall behind it, then they flipped back to the same scene, and its a wood paneling wall. They completely swapped out the walls. I can throw a pretty good punch, but..... paneling doesn't give like one would hope.

by the way I like Rhianna's voice.

I solely listen to music that we upload. My Ipod has been stripped of all things commercial. Do I turn my nose up at it? Nope, I just have a connection with what you people post.
