Almost forgot to mention that the annual PaddyFest starts today. Post your Irish songs in the usual way in the Original Songs or Cover Songs boards and set the message icon to Festival Submission (see https://songcrafters.org/community/index.php?action=articles;sa=view;article=13). We'll then add your song to the PaddyFest jukebox.

It's time for PaddyFest 2018.

Let's raise a glass of green beer to fenderbender and post some Irish songs in remembrance.

Hilary

Maybe we could honour Tommy's memory and change the banner name.

No. I asked Tommy about the name four years ago. He said that it's not in the least offensive to Irish people and there was no reason to change it.

I have no doubt that when used in a certain context and with a certain attitude, the word Paddy could be offensive. But without that context and attitude, it's not offensive at all.

Here's the definition from Wikipedia:

1) Proper noun: An Irish nickname for Patrick.

2) Noun: (slang, sometimes offensive) An Irish person.

In PaddyFest, we're using it as a proper noun referring to St. Patrick's Day. So it's merely a nickname for Patrick. But even in the second usage as a noun, it's only offensive "sometimes". The rest of the time, it simply means an Irish person, with no offense intended or assumed.

Tommy said 'We in Ireland call it St.Paddy's Day a lot. The only name we don't call it is "St. Patty's day."'  And he sent me this newspaper clipping:

By the way, my paternal ancestors were from County Clare so I obviously don't want to insult the Irish people. That's why I asked Tommy. I don't want the ghosts of my ancestors haunting me. :)  But Tommy assured me that I can rest easy with the knowledge that it's not insulting.

I thought Hilary meant we could add a mention to fenderbender on the paddy fest banner, to make a kind of tribute ?
