Title: Happy Canada Day everybody. What is your favorite Canadian music?
Post by: Bluesberry on July 01, 2010, 07:40:36 AM
Today all us Canadian fellas are off work today (well not everybody, sorry for anybody stuck in work today) getting ready to party, it is the official celebration of our great country, Canada Day. You guys have any favorite Canadian bands or singers, etc. Lets see them, in celebration of Canada Day. I'll start off by putting up one of my favorite bands, Blue Rodeo. I see these guys every chance I can, deadly live. This is good Canadian Alt.Country and I like it very much. These guys are a huge influence on my songwriting. Anybody else have any they like?
*******Note to Admins: Maybe we should do this kind of thing for the national day of every member on here, it is a dandy way to discover new music and have a little cyber party in honor of the day. I think it would be a great idea. Put the dates on the calendar and lets do it. *************

That was my first choice, but I didn't want to start off with something too obvious.

For me, it has to be Robbie Robertson. One of my main musical heroes and one hell of a guitar player (although he's never really given the credit he deserves...). I've being trying to get my son into The Band via 'The Last Waltz' movie.

A bit of Gordon Lightfoot never goes amiss either. Oh, and Leonard Cohen is pretty awesome too (not only for his music - his first novel was a cracker too).
Canada can keep Celine Dion though!!!! That's one export that should be banned!

Yes - Happy Canada Day everybody!!
We can't put a team in the World Cup, be we can crank out some serious tunes!!!
Some Canadian bands that I enjoy:
1. Buffalo Brothers (singer was local boy with unbelievable talent - this band is now defunct, but you can also check him out in Sweet Leaf Garrett videos (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gOTFjBqHB8k))
QuoteCanada can keep Celine Dion though!!!! That's one export that should be banned!
She`s actually from the stix in Quebec where they refuse to speak English Not that there`s anything wrong with that! ;D
I found that out first hand many years ago. I drove from Maine to Quebec, and couldn't work out why every single radio station was in French. I had this kind of preconception that it would be bilingual there. I was very, very wrong! My tiny amount of French didn't get me very far in Quebec. Even in McDonalds! It was an interesting experience though.

Not sure if I should admit this, but I like the crash test dummies, even though the singer looks like a zombie and sings like a vampire.

And apart from that, also Le Vent du Nord

So many and too much to mention so I won't - but I will watch every crap movie that has Lexa Doig in. I'm not even sure she qualifies as Canadian given her ancestory, but I just don't care.
And some of the music to Andromeda is pretty cool so I hope that justifies this random comment.

I'll crack out a loverboy vid in a few minutes as a subtle reminder that 80's style really wasn't as cool as I once thought.

These guys grew up ten minutes from my place. Didnt like them at first but now i love them...Love this guys guitar tone and great lyrics in their songs. Not rock pop crap at all!
I don't know these guys, but I REALLY like what I hear. I can see why you dig them - pure musical quality.

Yes, Blue Rodeo have been around for a loong time. Lots of good tunes.
The one Canadian band that i can`t believe which is very popular here and northern states is The Tragically Hip. Vanncad put up a vid already. They should be even more popular. They have so many Incredible tunes. Gord Downie the lead singer is an incredible poet. If you get their greatest hits CD, you will love them forever.
Oh yes. I'm a convert. The fact they have a telecaster and a danelectro bass on the go in this one grabbed me straight away, but the song is brilliant. Like REM but better.

Wow - Moxy! - Good one 64! We used to jam "Fantasy" around the campfire all the time. I think Greeny is a "Tommy Bolin" fan? I guess he played on the first Moxy album.

WOW, you guys have been busy. Max Webster, that is a big one for me, I saw them in my High school gym every year, they were equal to Rush in doing the local scene, Rush kept getting bigger and Max Webster disappeared, to re-emerge as Kim Mitchell. That cat sure could play guitar, he would solo for 20 minutes straight it seemed. This thread had turned into quite a hoot, I am glad I started it.
Here is the way I remember Max Webster, check out the guitar solo at 2:04!!!!

Max Webster rocked and liked a bit of Kim Mitchell solo. He`s a DJ at Toronto`s big classic rock station now..Q107....Go figure!! ::) You forgot this one..Same era as Max Webster.
Triumph! Rik Emmett is an amazing guitar and classical guitar player. Didn`t like Gil Moore too much. Why did he have a big drumset and just played snare all the time. Plus i don`t like drummers that sing. Double ego and no stage presence which is why i think they didn`t go as far as they should of. Should of just let emmett sing all the time.

Happy Canada Day Everybody! And I am stuck at work :( At double time and a half ;D Okay, some great choices so far...How about some Harlequin? How about some Streetheart? Unpretensious, straight ahead R n' R, with a decidedly British influence. Very popular in Canada late 70's, early 80's...and a lot of their music surprisingly still sounds pretty good. Neither band made a dent Stateside though...Paul Dean from Loverboy was the original guitarist for Streetheart and played on the first album before starting Loverboy. At the time, these 2 bands were about the best for straight ahead R n' R ( Rush were more considered Metal or Prog Rock, and I don't think Triumph should be considered for anything ;D ).

The lead singer just recently died..Frankie Venom R.I.P
Superb Gnasty, yes Teanage head, I saw them in my local ice rink in Burlington Ont. with the Dead Kennedy's, yes, my favorite Canadian Punk, that drummer was out-of-site.
Glad you could join us Satch-man, we are having quite the party here, lots of good Canadian beer is flowing tonight. This is my favourite Canadian rock song of all time. Big Wreck`s That Song.Couldn`t find a real vid for it! These guys rocked for a short time. He`s solo now with Thornley.

WOW what a way to finish this off, I am going to burn off my Canada Day hangover watching every one of the videos on this thread. It should take a few hours for sure. Great job everybody, I think we covered the Canadian Music scene pretty good, missed a few, forgot a few, left out a few on purpose (Nickleback I'm looking at you, just go away already ok), but all in all a pretty good collection of why we consider our Country to be a major musical force in the world, a force for good. Lets do this again next year.
*******Note to Admins: Maybe we should do this kind of thing for the national day of every member on here, it is a dandy way to discover new music and have a little cyber party in honor of the day. I think it would be a great idea. Put the dates on the calendar and lets do it. *************

For the English, I guess the closest thing we have to a national day is St.Georges day. It's so popular that most people don't even know when it is!!!! Sometime in March? I haven't got a clue!

I was thinking of something like that too. This topic was a lot of fun and it would be great to do the same for other countries. I'm not sure about the USA and Great Britain though. There's just so much great music from those countries and we already hear it every day of the year. It seems pointless to have a whole topic just for the music of the USA or Great Britain. But I'd love to have topics celebrating the music of Australia, Finland, France, Norway, etc. I have no idea when the national holidays for those countries occur, so I think it would be best if a member from each country started a new topic about a day or two before their national holiday so that we can all start searching for music from that country.
Thanks for starting this cool topic, Bluesberry!

On second thought, there are probably lots of artists who aren't well known outside the USA and Great Britain. Maybe videos of those artists could be posted to introduce their music to our members from the rest of the world.

Oky, I need intervention I can't stop! I've swelled page 6 of this thread but I can't stop...I think it's national pride but I am quite sure this will do it for me. Time to write some new Canadian tunes of my own...but these, in my mind need to be included:
And I can't include Corey Hart without Bryan Adams...I know he writes formula love songs now and lives in England but he was sort of a bit cool and even edgy when he arrived on the 80's scene...and I like to sing his songs in the shower...to my wife.

I have to brag a little. For those of you who are Blue Rodeo fans. My cousin played with them in early 80's when they were known as The HiFi's. I think they released one single (really just Greg Keelor and Jim Cuddy). My cousin would just play live with them.
I also had a few strange meetings with Greg Keelor as he lived for years in a little town here in Ontario. He used to be stumble-bummed on the street in the day time, but always pleasant and gracious....I should mention these "stumble bummed" times were when they were already quite famous.
Great artist and great guy, but believe me the way he would look back then sitting on the street I'm sure people that didn't recognize him from Blue Rodeo felt bad and threw a few coins his way.
I certainly don't mean to offend anyone or speak ill of Mr. Keelor. Just telling stories of what I saw growing up.

No offense taken by me, I am a huge Blue Rodeo fan, and I love hearing stories like this about Mr. Keelor. He is an original and a very talented singer/songwriter, one of Canada's finest as far as I am concerned. And he is eccentric as hell. I often suspect some of the stories like this are embellishments and exaggeration, but in this case it is definitely true as You saw this. It doesn't in anyway diminish my love for his music hearing stuff like this. He is honest and real as far as that goes. Thanks for the great story upsetmind.

Likewise, Happy Canada Day, Canadians...
Skipping through some of the earlier posts, there's not a lot of Canadian music made out into the wide world is there? Back when I was working for Harman Kardon, an American colleague put me onto Bruce Cockburn's Dancing in the Dragons Jaw album, which is now a firm fave. Also Rush are right up there. Neil Young too.
Didn't realise Arcade Fire were Canadian.
Also, while we're on the subject, how do you explain Bryan Adams? ::)
On the list of National Days, can I put forward 1st March, St David's Day in Wales

HAPPY CANADA DAY EVERYBODY!!
I started celebrating last night too Bluesberry, so my mind is a little fuzzy as well. NOTE: There must have been 50 people lined up at our local "Beer Store" last night, so I would say your 85% statistic is probably right on the money.
Hey Nick - Regarding Bryan Adams, I'm not a huge fan, but here is a tune from way back that actually has a pretty good edge to it. I can't find a copy Brian Adams Adams doing it, but this ain't a bad cover:
Probably my 2 fav Canadian bands are The Tragically Hip (any album released before "Phantom Power"): Gord Downie's song-writing on their early albums is absolutely fantastic. I would highy suggest "Up To Here", "Fully Completely" and better yet "Live Between Us" (I was at that concert). They are all availabe for under 6 bucks on itunes.

Rush is brilliant. I love By-Tor and the whole Fly By Night album. I saw them perform it at Massey Hall in June 1975 (the Fly By Night tour), Jan 1976 (Caress of Steel tour), and June 1976 (2112 tour - the same concert that was used for their "All The World's a Stage" live album). All were great shows and Massey Hall was a great place to see them. Max Webster opened for them in 1975 and June 1976. The opening act for the Jan 1976 show was Mainline (Mike McKenna and Joe Mendelson).
I used to play lots of Rush songs back in the seventies and eighties in a few bands I was in. I'd love to record some of them if I could find someone who can sing like Geddy (it's not easy).

I spent part of my Canada Day celebration at The Vancouver Jazz Festival enjoying the still amazing Shuffle Demons from Toronto.
Mama said, "There's somethin' weird 'bout Billy" "I looked in his room and his bed wasn't slept in at all last night" But Papa said, "Ah, now Mama don't you go talkin' silly" "He's just a young boy, he's just sowin' his wild oats and that's all right"
But Mama said, "No, there's somethin' real strange 'bout my Billy" "The farmer down the road said he lost a few of his sheep last night" "I know he's my own flesh and blood but he makes my blood run chilly" "'Cause I saw him from my window and he was on the heel, just screamin' at the moonlight"
Is it any wonder we hate to see the sun go down And is it any wonder we hate to see the full moon comin' around
So Papa said, "I guess there's only one thing to do 'bout Billy" "Hand me down my gun, son, bring along that silver dinner bell" But Mama said, "Papa, I beg you, don't kill him" "'Cause I just couldn't bear to think about my baby in hell"
But he went down to the blacksmith, got him out of bed and said "Get your fire hot" "Oh, shut up your shutters and close down the doors, we're gonna need all the heat you got" "'Cause I want you to melt my silver bell down to a single shot" "I got a job to do and I got to get it done before the sun comes up"
Oh, so is it any wonder we hate to see the sun go down
Then we heard a shot and I said, "Papa got 'im" Then we heard a scream and Mama smiled and said, "Betcha Billy got 'im" But when I lifted up my eyes, there was Papa in the doorway starin' at the floor And my big brother Billy never did come home no more
So is it any wonder we hate to see the sun go down And is it any wonder we hate to see the full moon comin' around

I`m proud to say i saw Five Man Electrical Band and Jeff Healey real intimate and up close in a small 100 person bar. It was a tribute for 9/11 if i can remember right after it happened. Jeff Healey was a drinker and he was telling blind jokes before and after his performance. To see him play 5 feet in front of me was a phenomenal experience and one i will never forget. Wish i had my Iphone to record in HD at that time. :(
I've never seen Five Man Electrical Band but I saw Jeff Healey at the Ontario Place Forum. What an incredible performance! I love it when he gets up and starts jumping around while playing some amazing guitar. And without a strap! I don't know how he did it. I feel very fortunate to have seen him.
The opening act was quite good too. I think they were called The Jitters, if my memory serves me correctly.

Speaking of Tom Cochrane, how about his old band Red Rider and their big hit "Lunatic Fringe".

Glad you got to see him too 64! Amazing musician. I would say he was even more talented than Stevie Wonder & Ray Charles. We all know him for his rock & blues and versatile guitar style but everyone doesn`t know that in the end before he passed, he played and loved jazz the most. Watching him play the trumpet blew me away!!
yes the laser gun les paul is cool but that leopard skin outfit has to go!! Damn those cheesy vids are hilarious!! :D

Don't know very well this subject / topic... Just some classic ones that everybody knows here, plus one recent great canadian artist francophone songwriter, Pierre Lapointe.
- And for the end, a song in french.... coming from an artist very impressive and with a lot of talent : Pierre Lapointe (Album : La forêt des mal aimés, 2006) Un artiste francophone que vous ne connaissez peut-être pas qui fait de magnifiques chansons Pierre Lapointe

This is quite catchy.
Canadian, Please
Song & video produced by Julia Bentley & Andrew Gunadie
Yeah I know that you wanna be Canadian, please Even if in winter things tend to freeze We've got the world monopoly on trees And our country's bordered by three different seas
Yeah I know that you wanna be Canadian, please We invented the zipper, we've got expertise We made insulin to combat disease Yeah I know that you wanna be Canadian, please
Brits have got the monarchy The US has the money But I know that you wanna be Canadian
The French have got the wine and cheese Koalas chill with the Aussies But I know that you wanna be Canadian
Et si ce n'était pas assez On a deux langues officielles: L'anglais et le français Ooh la la
Yeah I know that you wanna be Canadian, please Where else do you find mounted police Or go to the hospital and not pay fees Yeah I know that you wanna be Canadian, please
And when freshwater is in high demand We've got the world's largest supply on hand So you know that we could make a pretty good friend But it's even better if you can be...
Brits have got the monarchy The US has the money But I know that you wanna be Canadian
The French have got the wine and cheese Koalas chill with the Aussies But I know that you wanna be Canadian
So you're thinking to yourself, "How do I live in this beautiful country?" Well we've got some steps for you to follow...
STEP 1: Lose the gun STEP 2: Buy a canoe STEP 3: Live multiculturally STEP 4: You're ready, there is no more!
We got beavers, caribou and moose We got buffalos, bears, and Canadian goose And we're sorry about Celine Dion But she did do that good song for James Cameron...
Brits have got the monarchy The US has the money But I know that you wanna be Canadian
The French have got the wine and cheese Koalas chill with the Aussies But I know that you wanna be Canadian
The Greeks all chilled with Socrates Can't build a wall like the Chinese But I know that you wanna be Canadian
In Kenya they have safaris We've missed lots of other countries But I know that you wanna be Canadian

I`m pulling this thread out early cuz i might not be around. I got to see 54-40 for the first time a couple weeks back with April Wine which i`ve seen 25 times before but they were good as always. But 54-40 really impressed me a lot live. When the first song started the lead singer, Neil Osborne`s guitar, a nice Tele wasn`t working, so he handed it to the roadie quick and picked up his acoustic. When the second song started he tried the Tele again and it wasn`t working and he got really pissed and just threw the thing backstage..lol I was looking around in the crowd and nobody really noticed what he had done but i sure did..Haha That was surely just a hurting guitar after that launch.
Anyway i never really noticed how many good tunes this band has and i knew them all. They are from Brithish Columbia.

Indeed - happy canada day - for me Rush, Marc Jordan, Amanda Marshall, Max Webster, Triumph, Saga, IronHorse (bought the album when I was a kid, I don't know where it is now - but a LOVED that one album I had) ... the list goes on.
Interestingly, I listen to music first, love it - and many time's have found it's Canadian - odd, but that's the way it is. Perhaps I was canadian in a former life ;D Happy Canada day for tomorrow.

A new Canadian artist? I can't get enough of this song, so here are two exceptional live versions...the whole album is amazing. Pure bliss.
Yes, a fabulous song. But it's not a cover. Klaatu wrote the song and recorded it on their brilliant 1976 album "3:47 EST". When the album came out, there was a rumour going around that they were actually The Beatles recording secretly under the name Klaatu. Several of the songs have a Beatles quality to them.
If you've never heard "3:47 EST", check it out. It's a fantastic album. My favourite tracks are "Little Neutrino" and "Anus of Uranus", though they're not very Beatles-like.

[grooveshark]24195102[/grooveshark]
Here are a couple that are more Beatles-like:

[grooveshark]24193936[/grooveshark]
The vocals in this one don't sound like The Beatles but the music does a bit:
