Title: The next festival
Post by: 64Guitars on January 19, 2010, 03:12:30 PM
Quote from: 64Guitars on July 15, 2009, 10:19:25 AMMaybe sometime in the future we should have a comedy fest of funny/novelty songs (http://digitaldreamdoor.nutsie.com/pages/best_songs-novelty.html) and parodies. I think that would be a lot of fun.

Quote from: henwrench on December 07, 2009, 03:05:06 AMI'm beginning to lose track of all these fantastic pirate tunes. How about it, 64? Do you wanna compile our own Rouges Gallery somewhere, put 'em all in one place/one player? Or do you wanna wait 'til we've got a few more?

Let's have a PirateFest in January. We're in the middle of YuleFest now and I don't want to take the focus away from that. When Christmas and New Years are behind us we can focus on PirateFest and I'll make a web page for it.

Quote from: cuthbert on January 19, 2010, 10:21:58 AMlet me know when the Bowiefest begins... ;)

Quote from: oldrottenhead on January 19, 2010, 02:25:45 PMglen your vox on this is superb another one for the summer jukebox,
are you listening 64guitars can we have a summer jukebox festival thingy to take our minds of the cold

Everybody, put on your thinking caps and come up with some more suggestions for our next festival. Then I'll post a poll so we can all vote on what the next one will be.

To summarise the suggestions so far:

That's a pretty good selection already. But I thought I'd see if we can add a few more before posting the poll.

Goofy Great Festival

I'm looking for a theme rather than a name. I think "goofy" would fall under the theme of a ComedyFest, wouldn't it?

Themes could be based on an artist (as in NeilFest, BowieFest, DylanFest), a genre (FolkFest, JazzFest, CountryFest, MetalFest), an era (80sFest, RoaringTwentiesFest), lyrics (ComedyFest), vocal style (a cappella, barbershop, doo wop), etcetera.

This Wikipedia page on Song Forms might trigger some other ideas:

1970s TV theme songs !

Things like The Brady Bunch, Hogans Heroes (although that is a tune rather than a song), Gilligans Island, Happy Days etc etc etc

I'm with Geir, its time for a Beatles-fest.  Why not branch it out to Beatles/Rolling Stones fest, that way all the bases are covered.  They were like the two sides of pop in the beginning, they were even promoted as polar opposites, (good vs bad; clean cut vs grungy; popy vs bluesy, etc) yet they were really brothers in arms.  And most folks gravitate to one or the other band naturally.  That would give lots of choice in what songs to pick.  Or get really crazy and say British Invasion fest, although I like the compactness of just Beatles/Stones, still lots of songs to choose from there.

It's gotta be BeatlesFest then StonesFest, IMO they shouldn't be combined.

How about Sh*gFest = songs about doin' it!

Yeah Baby Yeah!

Thats great, the combination would create a kind of musical anti-matter and open up a black hole that would suck all popular music into.  I never thought of it like that, but yeah, probably right.

I'll throw out Elvis and Movie Soundtrack Songs, but whatever fest is chosen, I'll try to make a submission.

How about F*ckFest or Sh*gFest...

I'd love a Beatlesfest, followed by a Stonesfest. Or vice-versa.

Sandy, please tell me you meant a Shaggsfest...

I like this one! Although you are right about them being "tunes" as opposed to "song", it would a lot of fun TURNING the tunes INTO songs ;)

I also like BeatlesFest

Or how about an UnpluggedFEST... Can only be songs that are not normally acoustic and recording them acoustic.  *shrug*

I like the idea of that. This way we could to originals, backers and covers.

Unplugged punk fest is a very cool idea.  The heavy punk songs woudl sound very interesting unplugged.  We could do a naked-unplugged punkfest.

Unplugged punk fest sounds good, but there wasn't that option in the poll. So, I voted "unplugged", because that includes both Punk and the other genres...

Oh, the rich people want what dah poor peoples got,
And dah poor people want what dah rich peoples got...

Laughed myself silly about how most times each girl was playing a different song than the other in the same song! Their dad must have been a piece of work.  :D Although to give them some props, Frank Zappa said about their album "This sounds like the missing link between Fanny and Captain Beefheart & his Magic Band."

You know I had to look up the Shaggs, because I didn't know (Maybe I'm not cool?). But the crazy thing is, they are from Fremont. I live in the next town over from Fremont, and even frequent Fremont Pizza. Maybe they will have a reunion at the Town Hall someday.

I also live in the same state where a Supreme Court justice likes to ride around drunk wearing women's underwear, but that's a different story...

Mark, you got me to do a little more research on the Shaggs. Apparently the remaining(?) Wiggin sisters now reside in Epping, NH - not far from Fremont.

Everything you wanted to know about the Shaggs but were afraid to ask:

http://www.theshaggsonline.com/

There's an interesting article about their reunion show in 1999. I think the end quote sums their musical career up nicely:

"Let's face it," Porter (former Shagg Betty Wiggin) cuts in. "As we got going we would've gotten better, and it seems as though people don't want it better."

Amen. :)

Now about that Supreme Court justice...Souter?  :D

That was a cool read. I also saw somewhere that when in the recording studio, the girls would suddenly stop in the middle of a song because they "Messed up" - Which would baffle the producer/engineers, because they couldn't tell the difference!

It must be the water here - Superfund sites all over the place! If the radon don't get ya the farming chemicals in the water surely will!
