Title: What Book Are You Currently Reading?
Post by: SteveB on July 03, 2009, 02:53:03 AM
Thought I'd start a Book-Reading thread. Music & Literature are often co-inspirational.

I'm reading this at the mo. Don Felder's take on his life in the Eagles.
Seems a pretty laid-back and immensely-talented guy, who suffered most of the accompanying disappointments and frustrations of being a musician, but then hit it BIG.

Am travelling to my Family's place over the weekend, and so in light of the recent 2nd court case, I'm packing this to re-read a gripping account of Phil and his musical and personal odyssey.

I'm reading "I am Legend" and some books by Dean Koontz like Frankenstein...Lightning.....

I agree reading and music go together personally very well........

I also like reading technical books on subjects such as time travel, parallel universes, engineering mechanics, relativity, quantuum physics, mathematics, and of course digital recording!

Not reading anything right now. Ask me when I'm on vacation in a couple of weeks, and i'll have something for you.

But i just recently finished a book by Dan Brown called (translated directly into english from danish) Murderish Betrayal. About a great discovery from Nasa and some political problems gets thrown in there too. I'm not going to spoil more :) But its a great book and i really recommend it! I'm a big fan of Dan Browns books, and if you are too. You should definitely read this one! It's great!

And I am about to start "To Live Is To Die: The Life and Death of Metallica's Cliff Burton" by Joel McIver.

GNY - This was purchased from HMV(UK) sometime last year. Given the recent media coverage of PS's legal proceedings, I would surmise that it would still be freely available (Possibly an updated version is already in the Galleys). It is quite an outstanding read, and as far as I recall, there are quite a few pages devoted to Phil's involvement with your favourite 1960s Pop Group - both as a collective, and individuals. It's well worth searching out.

Yep, the book about Phil Spector was a decent re-read. I'm afraid Little Phil has been a bit too handy with the firearms over the years. The World will allow Artists' a lot of licence, esp when they're entertaining the cr*p outta It on the dancefloor, but cross a certain line and the World stands up to you and gets nasty. Always leave them wanting more, eh?

Anyway, to put food on the table, and more importantly D'Addario EXL110s on my Strat copy, it's necessary for StevieB to travel about for a certain number of days per week. Unfortunately, the Strat-copy stays home, and the only musical item I have is my (Ahem) voice, and the ever-present Pen & Paper. And so if I can't make music, well I can certainly read about it. And do you know what's been happening over the last few days? In dreams or upon awakening, I'm starting to remember lines and choruses from the songs on this Forum: BSZ's Samaanya (?) keeps trundling through there, FRK's flute melody from his film-score music was with me in the shower today, and after a recent cat-nap FMK's Where He Once Began almost certainly reminded me of this lot below singing about The Lunatic On The Grass! (Well done to ALL of you, by the way). So on my trip from tomorrow, I'm taking the book below, which I read a couple of years ago, but I'm one of these types that, as long as it's something that interests me, I can re-read a subject endlessly.  :)

If I could carry my guitar on my bike and play it on the train to work I would, but I can't and I have an hour to fill. This 'reading' stuff occupies my mind during this 'wasted' period and the book I have just finished was the brutally funny 'the war of Don Emanuel's nether parts'. Hysterical.

In light of BSZ's successful completion of his Opus: Death Of The Sun. Just an update with the book I'm reading (Cover featured above somewhere), on the making of Pink Floyd's Dark Side Of the Moon. (Hey, if BSZ's Concept premise were true, there really would be dark sides to the Moon!).
This book is to do with the physical nature of how the songs were put together, and just shows how far recording technology has progressed in 40 years, and how we really are privelleged to live in a time when we all can at least attempt to put together our own visions. Imagine have to cut lengths of tape precisely, and then stick the lengths together to make sound breaks, or loops, or song endings??
We have hit the jackpot, Guys & Gals. Let's keep making music!

An update on the previous book: The recording of Dark Side Of The Moon at Abbey Road. Forget Punk. If the Suits in charge of the Record Companies in the 1970s had known what was coming technologically in a few short years, (i.e. This Forum, its Hardware and Adherents), then they really would have sh*t themselves!!

On my Riches-Procuring jaunts this week, I'm taking the following book with me. It was a little after my time musically, but I'm always open to another's interpretation of their musical development.

Guerrilla Home Recording by Karl Coryat

1/3 of of it will not apply to my situation because it referrs to equipment that I will never own.  Of the remaining 2/3rds of it, I already knew half. Part of the half I already knew, I had temporarily forgotten.   :D So, was it worth the read? YES.  I've got maybe about 6 'how to' books on home recording and none of them are the complete package.  There are so many little tricks of the trade to put into the bag of tricks and it seems that you just can't get them all at one place. So, yeah. It was worth $9.99US for a used copy from Amazon.

Before that I just finished reading the Civil War trilogy  (Gods and Generals/Killer Angles/The Last Full Measure)by Micheal and Jeff Saara and then the prequil to all that on the Mexican war (Gone for a Soldier).  More than a typical history book, these historical novels explore the hero personalities of these events.... Ordinary people who found themselves caught up in extraordinary circimstances. The interest coincided with a road trip that Judy and I took this Spring up through the historic Shenendoah Valley and visited the battlefield at Gettysburg.

My previous Book-Read: The Modfather - My Life With Paul Weller. Yep, definitely worth a turn. In these days of bookshops full of shelves bending under a great-pile of Sh*t-Lit -(Some people dignify the genre with Misery-Lit), but it quickly became one of who could heap the most sh*t into as few pages as possible yet still make money, it's nice to see that 'Normal' childhoods are still written about; and one where music is played out as Backdrop to the Protagonist growing into a Teenager/Adult. Recommended.

This week on my Crust-Earning travels, I'm taking the following: A history of the LP-to-the-iPod. Should prove fascinating.

Yep the book above ^^^^ was worth a read, esp when you now have the irony of old-style record shops full of LPs and vinyl geeks. What goes around, comes around, eh?

Now dipping into this below, the story of troubled-genius Joe Meek.
Don't know where you lot live, but around here, every half-wit who's able to burp into a microphone is heralded as a comedy genius. But it does appear that Mr Meek really was the genuine article. (A genius, that is). A lot of the effects that we now take for granted, esp on these BR-machines, phasing and various echoes etc seem to have been directly influenced by Joe's pioneering work in the 1950s & 60s. I bought the book on the back of purchasing the recently-released DVD Telstar (which I haven't yet watched), and so will let you know how it all turns out. (Well, tragically, as it happens. But I won't spoil the story).

'Here, There and Everywhere.... My Life Recording the music of The Beatles'
 by Geoff Emmerick.

It helps to be smart, talented, dedicated and energetic. Being incredibly lucky doesn't hurt either!  When he was barely 16 years old Geoff Emmercik began his first day on the job as an apprentice sound engineer at EMI studio in London, on Abby Road.  Just so happened on that same day a fellow named Brian Epstein brought his little four-piece band into the studio for their first sound test with George Martin producing.  And the rest is history...

Geoff quickly rose up the ranks to become a full-fledged sound Engineer at EMI and won his first Grammy for best engineered album of the year for Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band.  He would go on to win 3 more Grammys.

The book contains lots of eyewitness accounts of Beatle recording sessions along with thoughts and comments from the sound engineer's perspective.  He provided a lot of the technical savy and how-to solutions that were employed to pull off the ideas that the Beatles (and George Martin) came up with.

It's especially interesting for a home recordist to hear Geoff telling about how they had to bounce (they called it 'rendering') from the four track tape machine to another 4-track machine in order to free up more tracks. Most of the time in the early days they were mixing to mono so a bounce would free up 3 empty tracks.

Read this book along with 'All You Need Is Ears' by George Martin and you will feel like you've got a pretty good sense of what went on in those magical days at Abby Road.

Watched the DVD Telstar last night. Hmm. There was a quote about the 1990s film version of Titanic which said: There were 1400 stories on this boat, and this was the lousiest to pick.

I'm afraid Telstar suffers something of a similar fate. It can't seem to make its mind up which story it wants to tell: Joe Meek the paranoid Artist. Joe Meek the incompetent business man. Joe Meek's life as a public-toilet-visting homosexual. Joe Meek the pioneering recording genius.  The film itself is well-made and periodic, and certainly worth a watch, but just seems a bit directionless. Oh Well, perhaps a second view at some stage will enlighten more.

Am going to be dipping into the book below, to see what Eric has to say for himself?

A sometimes lough-out-loud account of the making of the film 'Some Like It Hot'.
Let's say that on occasions Marylin Monroe could be difficult to work with, though it also has to be said that MM's ego wasn't the only one strutting and fretting upon the Sound Stage. When even 'Mr Placid' himself Jack Lemmon's patience is lost then tensions really have reached a breaking-point. Perhaps the whole episode is best summed up by the film's Director Billy Wilder who said: 'We were in mid-flight before we realised we had a nut on the plane.' It's well worth a read, if only into the insight of just what a cattle-market acting in Hollywood was like in the 1950s.

Henry Miller. Sexus. I found it in a charity shop.

It was a precursor to the Beat Generation books and influenced writers such as Jack Kerouac and was commented favourable upon by George Orwell.

It has a lot of sex in it. Many of Millers books were banned in his home country.

It's one of those streams of consiousness things. I'm enjoying it. There are another two books in the series. I plan to read them too.

I'm reading an incredibly funny book right now (although the humor may not be for everyone) called Fargo Rock City: A Heavy Metal Odyssey in Rural North Dakota by Chuck Klosterman.  It's basically a fan's-eye view of predominantly 80's metal (of which I was not particularly a fan.  That conflicted with my no lyrics/fusion ethos back then.). I've included a random chuckle below.

Although the lyrics of "Here I go again" by Whitesnake are about forging one's own path and being a loner, the director...seemed to think the song was about a woman trying to fuck a car.  Luckily, this was 1987, and Coverdale happened to be dating Tawny Kitaen.  Ms. Kitaen isn't a particularly good thespian, but she is very, very good at humping the hood of a Jaguar.

I'm reading "The English Civil Wars: 1640 - 1660" by Blair Worden. An excellent, easy to read and not long book that looks at the political and social issues through the conflicts. What struck me was how he presents the slide into conflict in such a way that it is easy to see that neither side intended this to be a long, drawn out confilict that would unleash religious extremism and create major societal upheaval. In fact, at the start both sides thought there wouldn't be a "real" war and felt one battle would conclude matters. How wrong they were, and how sad that our stupid politicians don't ever read and understand these kind of things. Rushing into war is easy, but the results are rarely what the initiators intended.

The Electric Kool-Aid Acid test is an incredible read. The historical impact of Ken Kesey and the Merry Pranksters on music, culture, and anti-culture is immense. For anyone interested in Psychedelic music, all the seeds are sown here. Allen Ginsberg gets in on the act (one of the greatest cultural driving forces of the 20th century), and for 'On the Road' fans, Neal Cassady pops up to span decades and drive Ken's bus across America - all funded by the movie proceeds of Ken's book 'One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest'. I can't recommend it enough!

Just read Ginger Bakers Autobiography — an ok musicians biography, better read than Clapton's, though Clapton probably is a nicer person. Anyone read Jack Bruce's?
Reading Murakamis' Sputnik.... Recomended, music is important in Murakamis writing.
Plus a number of other books. I have always many going at the same time.  A Stephen King biography, Benazir Bhouto (spelling?), atleast one or two RLS or Conrad...

If I had to choose between books and music I wouldn't.

Took the opportunity during the Forum hiatus to read this below; the biography of Tony Wilson. A newsreader in the North West of England, who also started Factory Records, home of Joy Division, Happy Mondays etc.
A very polarising character was our Tony, who had a lot to say for himself, including this, when in discussion about ways to commit suicide: "I'd throw myself off the top of my ego".
It's a very easy read which genuinely throws up some surprises, which I won't repeat in case you wish to read the book.
When asked about what epitaph he'd like (When he was very much alive and no sign of illness), he replied: "Made a difference".
Whether you like T.W. or not, he was probably right.

My xmas reading has been 'The Life of Debussy' by Roger Nichols.

Very boring.  Why do composers always have to have had a life of not fitting in and then struggling pathways to ultimately find their great contribution?  I'm sure the life was interesting enough but this biography isn't.  I think biography must be the thing that people take up when they find writing shopping lists too exciting for them.

Some years ago I read the journals of Arnold Bennett.  Now there was bloke who knew that writing books and plays was a lot better for his health and bank balance than laying bricks and had the decency to enjoy his life when he wasn't at his desk.

Plowed through two over the last couple weeks (ahhh, vacation).

First one was The Road by Cormac McCarthy. It is a post-apocalyptic jaunt through America where father and son attempt to forage for food whilst avoiding the odd cannibal or three.  It won the Pulitzer Prize.  I thought it was tripe. It struck me as the narcoleptic version of Speed.  I was expecting some sort of moral pay-off, but the ending was just blah. I guess I'm just an idiot.

Second was the autobiography of Anthony Kiedis.  Don't know what possessed me as I was never a fan. I guess I wanted to read about a drug-addled and self-absorbed person because that's what I got.

Since my last two were duds, I've decided to read Siddhartha by Hesse.  Haven't read it in years but am looking forward to it.

After complaining about the biography of Debussy, I'm happy to report that this is a great book.

Richard Willams, 'The Blue Moment: Miles Davis's 'Kind of Blue' and the remaking of modern music.

Williams (UK readers might recognise him either as a sports writer (Independent) or as a music writer and the really old amongst you might even remember him as the first -pre Bob Harris- presenter of The Old Grey Whistle Test) takes Kind of Blue as a launch pad and goes on to show its influence on all sorts of stuff - minimalist music, The Velvet Underground, James Brown, Brian Eno, Soft Machine, and on - and it makes sense.

Well worth the money (I got it from the library) and the time to read it.

HWH - Up to a few weeks ago I always had the complete WS on mybedside shelf. God, whoever did write the works of WS, they were certainly a one-off. It started for me on a school-trip to Stratford-upon-Avon. We were about 14 years old and the usual motely crew, including some less-than-academic brusiers from the school football (soccer) team. The play we saw was Coriolanus, and at the point in the play when the eponymous soldier faces a slippery tribunal who are trying to trip him up, he replies (something like): '...Where I have stood in battle, I have fled from words.'
At that point I realised that Education wasn't just necessary, it is vital.
I later took part in a few Am-Dram productions of Macbeth (mostly playing Seyton, Macbeth's steward). We did one version set on a building site, with the cast wearing hard hats, and the scaffolding serving as the castle battlements.
Shakespeare? Simply unique.

One of the finest! I hope you've read all the Bukowski's. He's my favourite writer by far.

When you've finished with him, try John Fante who was Buk's hero / favourite writer. Read 'Ask the Dust' and you'll see why. He only wrote 4 novels, but he's great.

And 'Journey to the End of the Night' by Celine... another Bukowski influence.

Ahh... aren't books great?!

Thoroughly depressing.

This is an interview with the author:
Quote from: http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=106853619Chris Hedges describes the polarities of the two societies he says we are now living in: One side is based in reality and able to separate illusion from truth; the other side is rooted in fantasy. The latter, Hedges says, is the growing majority. The Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist talks about Empire of Illusion and what he views as the erosion of American culture.

Reading this...
An interesting account of the their individual lives, and then the sometimes-explosive relationship between these two. (It's also a reminder that popular music existed before the electric guitar.)
An interesting feature at the end of the book is to tell the subsequent careers of some of the other main characters. For instance, one of the original singers in the 'Savoy' operas only died in 1970. Which is right about the time that some of the Members of this Forum were breathing their first. Musical overlap, eh?

I finally finished the gloom and doom book (https://songcrafters.org/community/index.php?topic=3512.msg80850#msg80850) I was reading.

Now I'm reading Three Kilos of Coffee, the autobiography of Manu Dibango.

Quote from: http://www.press.uchicago.edu/presssite/metadata.epl?mode=synopsis&bookkey=3632891In 1948, at the age of fifteen, Manu Dibango left Africa for France, bearing three kilos of coffee for his adopted family and little else. This book chronicles Manu Dibango's remarkable rise from his birth in Douala, Cameroon, to his worldwide success—with Soul Makossa in 1972—as the first African musician ever to record a top 40s hit.

Composer, producer, performer, film score writer and humanitarian for the poor, Manu Dibango defines the "African sound" of modern world music. He has worked with and influenced such artists as Art Blakey, Don Cherry, Herbie Hancock, Harry Belafonte, Paul Simon, and Johnny Clegg. In Africa, he has helped younger musicians, performed benefit concerts, and transcribed for the first time the scores and lyrics of African musicians.

The product of a "mixed marriage" (of different tribes and religions) who owes allegiances to both Africa and Europe, Dibango has always been aware of the ambiguities of his identity. This awareness has informed all of the important events of his life, from his marriage to a white Frenchwoman in 1957, to his creation of an "Afro-music" which joyfully blends blues, jazz, reggae, traditional European and African serenades, highlife, Caribbean and Arabic music. This music addresses the meaning of "Africanness" and what it means to be a Black artist and citizen of the world.

I resisted Stephen King for most of my adult life, concluding that I had enough horror in my life already!!  :o

But a work colleague (female), suggested reading Different Seasons, which was 4 novellas in one book. Good Lord, what a revelation! 2 of the stories have been made into films: Stand By Me, and The Shawshank Redemption. (The other two may have also for all that I'm aware), and I've still got a couple of other Kingies to read (which I will). I haven't attempted any of His doorstoppers (900 pages + etc), but certainly those shorter stories are well worth reading.

Stephen King’s “All That You Love Will Be Carried Away” is about a frozen food salesman Alfie Zimmer, who has to decide to either change his life and write a book or end his life by his own hand. He wants to write about his collection of sayings he has written down during his traveling.

I went through a phase of being a real King fan and have read most of his books.  I think that  the Stand is one of his best and have read it at least twice.

Mind you, I have to say that he has written some rubbish as well.  There was one "short" story I read about strange goings-on in Muswell Hill - or was it Crouch End - in London.  I tend to think he's better when he sticks to writing about Maine.

I always liked King page to page but thought he was pretty hit or miss with how he ended books.  Some of his plots are pretty silly as well, but I really dug The Stand (up until its endless denouement). I think I read that one at least three times.

I'm reading No Angel: My Harrowing Undercover Journey to the Inner Circle of the Hells Angels.  Can't say why I picked it up, but I must say it's interesting.  Don't know how the undercover guys do it.

I've just read this below. The history of the World's greatest painting, which was basically unsurpassed for 500 years until the invention of modern photography. And when you think that this 3 foot piece of wood & oil travelled from Bruges, Belgium, to Spain, twice (Once via the notorious Bay of Biscay), was stuck in a lavatory for many years, got caught up in war and revolution, crossed the English Channel to end up in London, it makes you ask questions about destiny. Anyway, a fascinating read, whose text was completed by the Author's husband after Carola Hicks died of cancer just before the book's completion. Well worth a read.

Am in the process of finishing this one.
Apparently Europe wasn't very nice in 1824 (so, what's new??).
Anti-libertarian was the norm, and definitely not the place to introduce a choral
symphony proclaiming the brotherhood of mankind.
It is also sobering to think that, were we somehow transported back there to hear
the new Beethoven work, although we'd recognise the toon of the Ninth, esp 4th Mvt,
the sound would quickly jar on our modern ears. No such thing as a symphony orchestra,
mainly a collection of trained musicians of varying ability, also amateurs thrown in, sight-reading
poor copies of smudged music sheets. Not a promising start for what would become the EU's
official anthem. Well worth a read this book.  :)

Sounds interesting. I liked the movie, Immortal Beloved which I think I recall painted a pretty bleak picture of Vienna in the 1820s. However, I just looked up the plot on IMDB, and I have no memory of the love story / mystery aspect of the movie -- which puts into question my recollection of the movie.

I think I've got the movies around here somewhere but I haven't got around to watching them yet. Maybe after I've read the book.

Reading a few books at the moment. The new Stephen King novel 11.22.63, about time travel and the Kennedy assasination. A history book about D-Day, and far From The Madding Crowd. I lovbe Thomas Hardy and have done since my school days, noone writes quite like him. each chapter is like being transported back 15o years, magical stuff.

Am literally just finishing Jude The Obscure for the 2nd time - 1st time was in paperback, and this 2nd time a decent Folio Society copy. Sh*t, you've gotta sympathize all round. Hardy for raising merry hell for himself by writing it, and for the benighted characters he created.  :'(
Before this I read Claire Tomalin's biography of Hardy, A Time-Torn Man. What a transcedent life he had, from rural backwater to people flying the Atlantic. Quite a life.

Ah, great book.  :)

Had the 864 on moving from Tascam cassette to digital. What a revelation!
And honestly, the only genuine niggle I had with the 864,(ultimately), was the 2 tracks-per-fader.
It went from being ??? through  :'( to eventual  >:(.
I recorded my first multi-track-overdub-whatever on the 864, the song being 'My Home Town', which although being re-mixed is essentially what I first uploaded to Songcrafters (although I seem to recall the Forum was a different incarnation then).
I'd study the 864 manual well, SB, essentially all the Boss BR series do the same. Good luck.  ;)

I tell you what, they would be a lot more fun if they actually told you how to do stuff properly.

I'm 'reading' the Roland GR-55 manual and it's as crap as the BR800 manual I went through before it.

Boss/Roland make great kit but their manuals are a total afterthought, if it wasn't for the boffins on this site I wouldn't know half the stuff I do now.

It's not bad, quite quirky and takes you to the unexpected which I like but the downside is it's easily put-downable. I'm about a 3rd of the way through so can't comment fully yet.

birdsong-by-faulkes_zps2c0f5191.jpg Haven't seen the tv adaptation - which got some mixed reviews - but picked this up at the local library.
The author asks a simple question in the introduction: 'What was the Somme like before it became The Somme?'
And so the story begins in 1910/11 in northern France.
A bit slow at first - though we have the advantage of knowing what's coming to the area -but IMO an ultimately rewarding read.

Check the saddles on the bridge. Only three saddles for six strings.

The best you'll ever be able to do regarding tuning it, is three strings at concert pitch and good luck with the other three. As long as all the other instruments in the band are out of tune by the same amount, I guess its okay to sound somewhat odd. Poor design.

Whilst these are work-related, I'm interested in them outside of that. Neuroscience and behavioural economics are fascinating insights into how our brains do as little as possible when making decisions. Our only 'true' reaction happens in a split, unconscious second before all our fears, risk assessment, predjudices, and experience kick in.

Would recommend anyone read the first Freakonomics book, along with 'The Tipping Point' by Malcolm Gladwell.

I've been wending my way through the Aubrey Maturing series by Patrick O'Brian for a couple of years with other books interspersed.  The film "Master and Commander" with Russell Crowe and Paul Bettany was based on this series.  I like the seafaring tales.  They're easy reading for the end of a busy day.  I've also read the Horatio Hornblower series.  I've learned cool details like the devastating effect of splinters of wood during naval battles and the boredom during blockades.  They don't show that in the movies.

Just read "Room Full Of Mirrors" the Jimi biography.

I've ordered a half dozen fantasy books off of Amazon for .01 a piece (plus 3.99 for shipping... each.) The Garrett series by Glen Cook is pretty cool if you are into that sort of thing.

This is the 2nd historical novel that I've begun by 1980s anarchic-gobsh*te Ben Elton, and I have to say that Benji is turning into a first-class writer - (The other novel by Ben is 'The First Casualty' - which I thoroughly recommend).
I'm only a third of the way into this latest one and it's quite delicious - an extremely well thought-out time-travel lark. Way to go Ben.

Finished this book some while ago now, and I'd recommend it as a deffo read.
In fact it's placed on my read-again-sometime shelf.  8)

Given that most members of Songcrafters etc will have listened to music too loud and too often for their own good,
this book is a quite sobering tale of what it's like to become hard-of-hearing.

Haven't been on this thread in a long time. I don't seem to find time to read much of anything until winter. So far this year, i read "Life"...Keith Richards autobio..."Waging Heavy Peace"...Neil Young autobio....a bio of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers...and am now about half way thru the bio/hx  "One Way Out" about the Allman Brothers Band. One thing they all had in common..they all started out as nobody and crawled their way up the ladder...and "success" finally came in an almost "overnight" fashion. It also eventually took a heavy toll on them all. Next up for me is Eric Clapton's autobio and then "Light and Shade", conversations with Jimmy Page. Any body has any comments on the above books i'd like to hear your opinions.

just finished reading the Altered Carbon trilogy by Richard K. Morgan, great cyberpunk science fiction, apparently netflixs are gonna turn it into a tv show. personally i don't think it is remotely possible to turn it into a tv show. cos in the novel's somewhat dystopian world, human personalities can be stored digitally and downloaded into new bodies, called sleeves. the lead character Takeshi Kovacs  changes sleeve practically every chapter, still the same person but in a completely different body.

I got three books for Christmas:

I already read the first two and I am starting the Gordon Lightfoot book tonight.

Greg Allman's book was good. I'm not a die-hard Allman Brothers fan, but it was a good read and I would recommend it for anyone who wants a little history of the band.

The "Escaping the Delta" book is great for any old-school blues fans. It gives a lot of info about the blues artists that came before Robert Johnson and how they influenced the music of guys like Robert Johnson, Muddy Waters and Howlin' Wolf. The author goes into the meanings of some of the lyrics and it's kind of neat to hear some of the innuendos they came up with for songs in the 1930's.

Well, now, some very, very intelligent people at Photobucket.com have decided to end their free photo-hosting site and now require punters using Photobucket to stump up almost $400 per year for the once-free service.
Well yeah guys I can see how attractive that's gonna be to the average Joe  -  not. So, presumably like hundreds or thousands of others I've closed my Photobucket account. As I get time and inclination I'll re-upload photos etc, as I survey the wreckage that once was Photobucket.   ::)

By the way, I'd like to thank All the contributors to this thread - I've just re-read the whole lot, (looking for Photobucket photo-holders to remove or replace), and there really are some fascinating insights into reading habits. Well done everyone.  :)

In the Heart of the Sea

Really enjoyed it. Its the story of the whaleship Essex, which was wrecked in 1820 by a sperm whale.
This was a huge story at the time, was apparently taught in schools, etc. and was the inspiration for Moby Dick.

If you like books about starvation, desperation and cannibalism, you'll love In the Heart of the Sea!

But don't take my word for it...

I just read the condensed version of the story of the Essex on Wikipedia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Essex_(whaleship)). Very interesting. It answers a question that has long puzzled me. On the 1971 album "Nantucket Sleighride" by Mountain, the title track is dedicated to Owen Coffin. Until today, I never knew who that was. I assumed it was some friend of the band or something like that. But the Wikipedia page about the Essex says that Owen Coffin was the first of the Essex's crew to draw the short straw and be shot and eaten by the remaining crew. The Wikipedia page about Owen Coffin (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Owen_Coffin) says that Felix Pappalardi confirmed that the Owen Coffin in the dedication was the one from the Essex tragedy.

By the way, I saw Mountain in December 1970, about a month before the "Nantucket Sleighride" album was released. They performed that song and during the introduction of it, Felix Pappalardi explained that a Nantucket Sleighride is a term used by whalers for when they harpoon a whale and it takes off, towing the whaleboat behind it at high speed. This was very dangerous as some whales would dive deep, dragging the whaleboat and its occupants underwater with it. I was glad that Felix explained the title of the song and album. I just wish he'd mentioned who Owen Coffin was so I wouldn't have to wait almost 48 years to find out.  :)

I read a thriller by Paula Hawkins: The girl in the Train (Finnish edition). I'm a friend of thrillers and can recommend this book...

"Rachel catches the same commuter train every morning. She knows it will wait at the same signal each time, overlooking a row of back gardens. She's even started to feel like she knows the people who live in one of the houses. 'Jess and Jason', she calls them. Their life - as she sees it - is perfect. If only Rachel could be that happy. And then she sees something shocking. It's only a minute until the train moves on, but it's enough. Now everything's changed. Now Rachel has a chance to become a part of the lives she's only watched from afar. Now they'll see; she's much more than just the girl on the train..."

I forgot that I had started this thread! Have  to re-read it when time permits. So, not sure whether you'll be able to make out the book titles from this angle, but anyhow. In my main room I have a desk and laptop, and also a reading sofa where I can stretch out at will and pass the time absorbed in whatever I'm currently reading, which at any one time nearly always includes a volume about music - further along the shelf from these books I have the 10 volume 'History of Rock' publication which took me a couple of years to amass, and is one of those items that you can start reading and find yourself still there several hours later! Anyone else into page-flicking??

Update Feb 2024: Re-uploading any fallen images etc that I can place.

Longish book ramble here (apologies, I'm a bit p*ss*d. That's U.K. for slightly drunk by the way, as opposed to being angry, which I believe is what some of the world think that it means). So, earlier we interred my Dad's ashes at the local cemetery, and we've now gathered at the family home to have finger-food and drinks in his memory. Anyhow, because I work in food retail (not for much longer kidddo!!), I've not been part of the U.K. Covid lockdowns - I've even got the company-issued T-shirt to prove it. So whatever time I was getting off from work, I wanted to be able to relax from the bizarre situation everyone was finding themselves in. So pre last-Xmas time, my other half typed into Amazon: 'war books for men', which on reflection seems strange as I'm an out and out music-type. So she ended up obtaining two paperback books by a newish U.K. author Mandy Robotham which were duly presented to me at Xmas and I picked up the first one to read in early January this year. Oh, Jeeze, what a premise! A trained midwife prisoner in one of the Nazi death camps is taken to be midwife to Hitler's pregnant mistress Eva Braun. I won't spoil it by revealing further, but by the end of the week I had read both books and had ordered Mandy B's 3rd novel The Berlin Girl. This week I have received the pre-ordered 4th Mandy B. paperback which I have yet to begin - I wouldn't begin it because I knew today would be a bit fluid etc, with it also being, poignantly, the 33rd anniversary of when we cremated my youngest brother who had been killed in an R.T.A. by a drunken driver. Anyhow, if you want an engrossing read based around the World War II era, based in both Germany and Italy, Mandy Robotham is well worth a punt. Way to go! (Again, apologies for the ramble. God knows what this will look like when I sober up?!)

Not a massive reader but I always try to have one on the go, although it always takes me a good while to get through one. So posting a pic of what I tend to read... a mix of music, war, sport and then random ones

These are all pretty decent if I remember correctly. Somme Mud is particularly good if you are into real life accounts of war. And really enjoyed Fahrenheit 451. Haven't actually read Brave New World yet but put it in as it's next on my list after I finish Matthew McConaghy's autobiography

I was, as a boy, a huge reader of the 70s collection in my parents home library: there was a lot of science fiction, the good one - huxley, asimov, bradbury, orwell, ballard, dick. I remember brave new world was just the best of the bunch, along with I, Robot by asmov. But that was then, I'm curious what you think reading nowadays of this 'old' 'brave new world' LoL.

Currently reading "You left early: a True Story of Love and Alcohol" by novelist Louisa Young. The book is an account of her realtionship withthe late Robert Lockhart, concert pianist/TV and film score composer.
It seems a strange choice for me but the reason I bought the book is that Robert was in the year above me at Wigan Grammar School and I knew him as we were both in 6th form languages. Robert was also studying A level music and won a place at Oxford, going on to become a concert pianist and later moved into film and TV score composition. Very few from my school studied music as, in a northern working class town in the 70's, it wasn't deemed "manly". Despite this, and his regular appearances playing the organ at morning assembly, unlike the other music students he was always held in high regard by other pupils as he was also "one of the lads", being sporty, an under-age drinker and a smoker !
The last time I remember seeing him was in 1977 - he had returned back to Wigan after his first year at Oxford and called into our Languages form room for a catch-up, followed by a lunchtime pint. I still remember the conversation was about what bands we were into - for me at that time, it was all the upcoming punk bands - Sex Pistols, Strangkers, Jam etc. Although he was studying classical music, he was still into contemporary music.
Our lives followed different paths after that with Robert moving in artistic circles in London. Throughout his life he had a struggle with alcohol and sadly died in 2012.
The book is quite a laborious read in places and, If i didn't have a personal interest in reading it, I wouldn't recommend it.

I'm just finishing off Jack Kerouacs On the Road (1957). Before this i read several Irvine Welsh books. Richard Laymon is the king of everything written (in horror pulp genre :))...

I'm a fast reader and i had a pile of Irvine Welsh books available so it was a no brainer :) As for Laymon. I think writers like King, Koontz etc. are really taking the limelight and only a few people have even heard of Laymon. I think the best thing with Laymon is that he managed to writer gigantic books that are easy to get lost into. With King you often have to read about 50-100 pages before you're into the story. With Laymon it's more like 1-2 pages and you're inside the book. His later books were even better... But yes i'm talking about horror / pulp genre :)

Joe R. Landsdale is another fun one. In crime literature Charles Willeford is ace. I've read a lot of biographies also, but after a while some of those artist / band biographies become repetitive. The last one i read was Heroin Diaries by Nikki Sixx (and the only reason i read that was because i had it at an arms lenght ;)). One of the better artist biographies i've read was Sylvie Simmons book Serge Gainsbourg: A Fistful of Gitanes. Also those Guralnick books about Elvis Presley, and the Ray Manzarek Light My Fire: My Life with The Doors were good ones.

Reading "Shipwrecks of North Wales" by Ivor Wynne Jones, picked up at a car boot when in Anglesey area for something to read while on holiday. Impressively detailed list of many ships and their fates, delivered in a factual manner and not overdramatised which I appreciate. Some really good history tidbits, and means I can keep pestering my partner by asking her how to properly pronounce half the place names, and then embarrass her by having a go myself and completely failing.

For those interested in or old enough to be able to recall the events, this weekend starts the 60th anniversary fortnight of Humanity's worst case of squeaky-bum time: The Cuban Missile Crisis of October 1962. Given what Mad-Vlad is doing in Ukraine at the moment, it's proof-positive that mankind can always be relied upon to keep dropping b*ll*cks until one day our luck runs out. I can only recall the events of 1962 vaguely, but do remember adults looking glum and saying words like 'Cuba', 'America', 'War', and the like. Fortunately, most of the dangerous period coincided with the 'Teacher's Rest' half-term school holidays, so most of the time was spent in the fields 'potato picking' along with a lot of other people of the village. I'm now reading this doorstopper to re-acquaint myself with what happened.

I've been reading Max Hastings's account of the Cuban Missile Crisis of October 1962 - see post above somewhere. And because I wanted to try and do a chapter a day - to coincide with the 13 days etc that the incident(s) happened, I interspersed Max with these two post-apocalypse novels. It all turned out quite well thankfully. I've read On The Beach before, and there's also a 1960s movie that's worth a view. The other has a wonderful premise: a jumbo-jumbo jet is flying between New York and London during the night when a nuclear war takes place and destroys, well, sort of everywhere...I won't spoil it anymore. Though I did read on a movie forum that they are filming the book at the moment with Morgan Freeman in there somewhere. Nice.001c.jpg

This must be the most sex-filled book I've ever read. I've never read any erotica or romance – I've never been interested. Fans of these genres might find this book tame, I wouldn't know. I don't want to feel like a prude, but every time sex comes along in this book I feel like I'm in new literary territory (for me) and I'm not sure how to put myself in the right frame of mind.

Starting off not a bad read and the pics from the 60's & 70's are great!

I did pick up a copy of this book, and while it is an interesting and entertaining read, the guitar itself eventually comes across as a 'Trigger's Broom' type of affair, wherein the only original parts are the strap-nuts and pick-up cavity. Reinforcing the notion that the 'magic' is in Mr Gilmour's fingers etc rather than a shifting amalgam of Leo F's finest design. Hmm.
