Between free and forsaken
Between taking and taken
Between magical and miserable
Baleful and benign
Between radiant and ruthless
Useful and useless
Angelic and acidic
Resourceful and resigned.
Between north and south
Foot in her door and foot in her mouth
Between vague and venomous
And poison tasted
Credibility challenged
Credit card cancelled
Funds mishandled
Wakeful and wasted.
My queen without sceptre or crown
She's had more knocks than a rodeo clown
Sometimes life is as good as it gets
Chasing demons out and edging her bets.
Between control and chaos
Between frugal and frivolous
Between predator and prey
Between puerile and paralyzed
Peddling poems and popping pills
Picking pockets and people skills
Preparing wills and paying bills
Between paternal and patronized.
Sometimes she feels like she gave a performance
Other times watched from the cheap seats in the audience
A family raised; always done her best
Chasing demons out and edging her bets.
Loving the play with words in the lyric in fact loving it all the orchestration is excellent as always the breakdown with the bass and electric piano superb
Wow...very progressive sounding.....dense thoughtful lyrics and the music is superb
I loved this after hearing the 1st couple of chords.
Great production as usual.
The piano is so good and the drums, and the guitar.
Then of course there's the vocal work and the lyrics.
And then a bass solo thrown in for good measure, reminded me of Jacob pastorius.
Superb.
Stunning piece of work! Love that change up at 1:30 - lead and bass kills! As usual vocals top notch with great lyrics. It's got it all! 8)
Great song Ray. The lyrics are excellent mate. Top song. Incidentally I did a song called Kick Those Demons Out - nothing like this of course LOL. Nice changes in the song too. Bridge is cool.
If I were to comp this I would say it reminds me of the great John Wetton type tracks along with the great ness of the band Asia... you know Steve Howe, Geoff Downes, Carl Palmer? Not exactly but along those lines...
I certainly do not feel qualified in anyway to comment on this yet here I am attempting to...
it's a really complex pieces...lots of twists and turns yet it comes back to the main music idea, which is very catchy... but this would not be a typical hit song like you might hear from the knack... this is not something for the masses... this is for the cultured in music.... veers into that slowdown like some members of Floyd played with members of Little River Band...
but all in all... this is just how good you are Ray... hats off to you sir!
love the word play here too
So well written song on every way! Great lyrics, performance and arrangement. The bass solo is amazing!
Great lyrics Ray and i love the pattern /style flow of them, excellent piano, quite a varied song musically with the little pick ups and drops and musical sections, really nicely constructed, looking forward to when you do a 9 minute epic as musically lyrically and vocally would be awesome. don't leave me wanting more, i want 9 minutes or 20 lol, i not kidding either. great track
Loved from the intro and the change up half through was great. The word smith has struck again well done brother
Tim
Yeah brilliant stuff, really looked forward to the bass solo as I read the comments as listening and it was as mentioned pretty damn good. Everything so good here, will get future listens from me anyway. Great song.

I could see this as being a Peter Gabriel era genesis song. You're giving Tony Banks a run for the money on the piano here! I'm always an admirer of your sophisticated lyrics. And the Bass solo - now that's rare and unique and awesome!
Wonderful song Ray, those dark piano chords are so melancholic and the lyric is very thoughtful as always. I love the subtly of the arrangement here, like those jangley layers of quiet guitar. Beautiful fretless bass and harmonies too!
A big wow and smile from me. Smart and unexpected in multiple spots, including the end. The
piano is incredible here. A lovely performance and mix.

We should have ditched the whole Dylan/Donovan fest thing and gone with the Ray Brookes fest instead. We have the real deal here.
Wonderful songwriting and production. A class act.
If i was to nitpick i wasn't 100% into the drum sounds. They were a bit too sterile. The sounds as is might work, but some "sweetening" might have done good. Especially those sole snare drum hits + tom tom fills.
Well now, even these horror-tone laptop speakers can't stop the tasty originality from percolating through. Lovely production, playing and almost stream-of-consciousness lyrics. Very enjoyable. Well done. 8)
Very deep lyrics that seem to come from a special place in the heart. The music creates a most compelling backdrop. I especially like how you ended it.
A top-notch song Ray with some very fine lyric and vocals. When the drums enter it takes the production up a notch and when the solo enters it does it again! You have a lot of dynamic shifts here which gives it that professional touch. More than well done Ray!
Great song, I really liked the change of chords, excellent songwriting and production. Also great lyrics and vocal.
