The Man Upstairs
The man upstairs treads softly on my ceiling
Light footfalls barely make a sound
Is he trying not to be noticed
To find if I could forget he's about
The man upstairs seldom steps outside
I wonder what made him move away from the world
Did someone injure or offend him
Or is he just content to watch events unfurl
Who is the man upstairs
Should I try to know him do I dare
If I think about him does he care
Who is the man upstairs
The man upstairs views the world through his window
Looks out on the people as they pass him by
I wonder what he thinks as he watches
Does he gaze with indulgence or a critical eye
The man upstairs hears callers on the weekends
He rarely speaks that his voice is heard
So many are so loud with their praise and pleading
I wonder how they know when he utters a word
Who is the man upstairs
Should I try to know him do I dare
If I think about him does he care
Who is the man upstairs
The man upstairs seems to me to be lonely
In spite of the guests he indulges each week
I wonder how well they really know him
Have they overlooked his greatest need
The man upstairs treads softly on my ceiling
Does he recall that I am here
Could it be that I haven't noticed
Subtle signals throughout the years
Who is the man upstairs
Should I try to know him do I dare
If I think about him does he care
Who is the man upstairs
