Here lies the child asleep as I hold her
Her head on my shoulder and breathing so slow.
I like a mule, eyes wet and misty
Heart softened by whiskey getting ready to go.
Old fool am I to do other's bidding
Who was I kidding to think I could shun
The heart of my daughter; blood's thicker than water
And life just gets shorter for love on the run.
Here stands the wife, eyes cold and doubting
All through but the shouting I hope we stay friends.
Raising her child with love and affection
From kiss to conception as a busted heart mends.
Old fool am I as downhill I'm skidding
Who was I kidding to think I had won
The heart of the mother who still loved another
Now I run for cover from love on the run.
Here walks the father no wiser nor bitter
No fighter nor quitter just flesh blood and bone.
They both wave goodbye and yell see ya later
And I just a traitor wander off alone.
Old fool am I faking indifference
Agreeing in sufferance to what must be done.
Old fool am I; the end of a chapter
No happily ever after just love on the run.
Lovely song Ray, a sad story but beautifully done. Love the whistle in the right channel. Perfect.

That acoustic sounds beautiful with the penny whistle and an excellent lyric another beauty
Just plain beautiful. Great lyrics and the instrumentation is par excellence!
What a great song, Ray. Poignant and emotional lyrics.
Love the rhyme scheme and song structure. Nice work, as always.
Smoking beautiful brother you always continue to impress me

Not to detract at all from the excellent playing and arranging, but I really enjoy your lyrics. They draw me in immediately. Just a lovely tune. Love the Celtic lilt.

And then, at the perfect moment, the bass came in to reach right to my heart.
I am humbled. Every aspect of this piece makes me feel privileged to be listening. I'm not exaggerating. What a beautiful song. I got teary. I'm old and jaded. I don't get teary.
Thank you for sharing.

I pretty much always feel this way about your songs Ray and this is no exception. the lyrics are staggering, what a story...it resonates deep in my soul...
the music has a sadness that drives the story and yet I find hope also ... I think it's that flute ish sound... what a music scape to drive the story along...
I don't think I've heard a better set of guitars being recorded in a while. And a great tune as well.
really nice song Ray . i never know what you will come up with next its always so poignant with different and sometimes disguised in melody for deeper meaning,, so many different lyrical themes . this is cool story song, musically you make it sound easy, just subtle and perfect for the style of the song, nice vocal and performance. and production is always great.
What a beautiful song Ray, I'm not surprised..your songs are so amazing to hear. And your story telling is great. Quite a sad story, the music is so good. Beautiful acoustic, yeah I like the Celtic feel that comes into it. Like an Irish folk song near the end. Brilliant.
You've wrote some great songs in that home studio of yours :)
