Title: "Samaanya" by The Stan Laurels
Post by: Bosko Schwartz on May 25, 2009, 09:32:30 PM
As promised, here is the piano-driven Zombies-inspired (especially "Odessey & Oracle" era) tune I hadn't messed with for over a year, and have now re-visited and re-mixed to get ready for the upcoming album.

If you recall from my introduction, my debut album is going to be a concept album about alien abduction.  This is also a metaphor for a lot of the crazy shenanigans -- good and bad -- that have occurred in my life over the past ten or so years.  So this particular song is about the main character in the "mothership," after having been abducted.  First he babbles some crap about waiting for the "Space Police."  Then, he describes the namesake of the song, "Samaanya," who is either an alien or a robot, or some combination thereof, and toward the end of the song, he questions whether or not this is real or if he is "out of [his] fucking gourd."

I am well aware that to have an entire album filled up with such silliness means that I am not quite right in the head, but I am OK with that. ;D

(update by oldrottenhead) video for song now on youtube

Any and all feedback is welcome and encouraged.  Don't hold back!

We are apparently the lonely guys on this thread.  People still tend to hover over on the Micro BR side of things here.  Once again, you have pulled off not only a great tune, but the production is extremely impressive.  I think you might have nailed it on the first mix (that we've heard at least).

I especially liked the interlude (not so much the fast arpeggios but more when it slows dow with the mellotrony sound over the top).

I admire your piano skills as well.  It reminds me some of Neal Morse's solo stuff (not his progressive rock).  He did two albums, an eponymous one and another called It's Not Too Late that are piano heavy.  Check out the sound sample of the first tune here: http://www.amazon.com/Its-Not-Late-Neal-Morse/dp/B000067UNC (http://www.amazon.com/Its-Not-Late-Neal-Morse/dp/B000067UNC)

Peace.

OK - Just so you know, I picked this up earlier and didn't impetuously post a feelgood response to boost your ego. Not that I would anyway, but I wanted to give you a couple extra listens in a few separate audio environments - I had the uncanny vibe it's what you are looking for  :D.

First off, I love the song, which might make my opinion biased. It is unique, catchy and fun to listen to.

The playing and production value is high, along with quality phrasing - No flaws that an average/amateur listener-player such as myself would notice.

The three segment (Whatever you call it) format works well - I would have preferred a lengthier first segment as the rhythm guitar was pretty tasty and I wanted more, but that's what it is. The format reminds me of some Yes and Neil Young tunes (Starship Trooper, Broken Arrow, Cowgirl in the Sand, Down by the River, etc), especially when rolling into the last segment - Walter Mitty interludes all the way!!

Your vox are great and I like the tight delay to it - Works with your voice very well.

And last, I noticed Blooby gave you a proper and positive comment. From what I know so far he has the balls to be honest and direct (Tactfully and respectfully, of course!) -in my mind that's a good inclination you don't want to mess around with this number any more than necessary. Not to mention that he has the talent to back it up...

Hope I didn't bring offense - loved the post. Would like to hear some more from your upcoming album.

Later,

Mark

Wow, 22 views and only 2 responses.  Sounds like I have gotten the ass-end of the phrase, "If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all."  Kind of fits with the overtly positive nature of this forum, so I guess getting no response is better than hearing things like "You're a hack!" or "Put down the piano and lick rhinoceros balls, good sir!"  I wonder if I blew it by telling people all that shit about alien abduction.  Maybe I have called myself out as the official wacko of the group a little too early in the game.  Either that, or I'm just a one-hit wonder.  Oh well, you can't strike gold every time.

Now, all of that said, two of you did take the time to post very lengthy reviews, so I have to heartily thank both Blooby and launched for doing so.

Bloob, thanks so much for the kind words, especially about the production.  Since I am taking the time to create a full-length album from scratch, I really want the production to be at least as good as I can get it.  It's never going to sound like George Martin or Eddie Offord, but I'll do my best.  This is definitely not the first mix, but the first try after having it sit on the shelf for a year plus.  Thanks also for the props on the piano playing.  I am no Billy Joel or Rick Wakeman, but I think I did OK this time around.  I couldn't get the Neal Morse link to play, but I will surely check him out.

launched, I'm not sure what you are referring to, as I found nothing offensive in your post.  I ask for nothing but honesty here.  This is not a "forum" for ego massaging.  Well, OK, judging from all of the posts I have read about everyone's work, I take that back -- it definitely is that, but my point is that I don't want people to say nice things if they don't mean them.  Even so, you had almost solely positive comments, so no need to apologize for anything!  Thanks for picking up on the Yes influence -- one of my top 3 favorite bands, without question.  I guess the first part could be longer, but then the song would go over 5 minutes, which I didn't really want to do.  I figure if people want more of that part, that's why I return to it in the third segment.  It's definitely a risk to throw that sort of "classical" interlude in the middle out of nowhere, but you will find that very few of my songs follow any sort of popular song pattern.  The sound I'm going for is "pop" (in the old school meaning of the word, a.k.a. Beatles, Zombies, Hollies, etc.) but sort of "prog" at the same time.  Certainly, my musicianship isn't at the caliber of most prog artists, but it's such a huge influence that I can't ignore it.  Plus, the subject matter is pretty fantastic and absurd, as with much prog.  So I guess it's sort of pop-psyche-prog.

To both of you, I think this is the final mix.  I don't have much feedback to weigh other than from the two of you and my own ears, and I think this one's an album-ready wrap that I will not be messing with again.  Thanks again very much to both of you! :)

Sorry its taken a bit to get to this, as you know the MBR section gets more use with all the MBR users..... on the upside the posts on all the other recorders stay up and live for a lot longer.......
This is musically and production wise so far beyond my level of expertise I feel I can't offer anything but praise...It is in a different league.....
I think that is another reason for the lack of comments......
A lot of us are on a very different place on our musical journey and need our ego's massaged to help us grow......

I think everyone is having difficulty in keeping up with all the posts, so it's easier to gravitate to where your own BR 'kin' are - in my case, the Micro. So please don't take any lack of comment or views personally. Believe me, if this were on the BR Micro thread, people would be lavishing praise galore on it  :)

I can hear the Beatles in this pretty clearly (with a bit of Colin Blunstone, for sure), which for me, is the best thing in the world. But then it has all sorts of other things going on too. And I love the shifts through different phases. I saw you liked TomH86's work - and I can hear why. You both share a similar(ish) vocal style. This is really GREAT music. It's expertly played and produced. As 48 points out, it's almost in a different league to the rest of us. That doesn't mean that there's jealousy on here, just an awkwardness for some people in knowing what to say. Remember that there a some people who have been here a long time, and we've seen them grow and improve over time. This track alone shows that you are already at a level way beyond what most of us will ever get to.

Anyway - I liked it a lot!!!!!! Actually, more than a lot! And as for weirdness, you're in fine company here, so I wouldn't worry about that.

And for those of us in the UK, part of the melody will seem quite familiar....  :D :D :D

Nice Vocals too! How did you do the drums?

Holy shit man, this is BRILLIANT (I try not over use that word as it gets diluted)!!!! Are you kidding me? You're a genius (another word I try not to over use)! First of all, this is my kind of ear; Flaming Lips meets Bill Ricchini, but unique in itself. melodic, catchy, interesting, intelligent, creative, conceptual.....you get the point. I don't want to offend anyone else on this site, but, honestly I'm kind of surprised you're here; I had the impression this was a site for a bunch of hacks (I'm referring mostly to myself of course) not professionals who probably have been classically trained and play in front of large audiences (something I have never done til' this day). (I should delete the above because it's bound to offend someone, but it gets my point across) Thank you, for turning me onto my new favorite band! Can I be president of you fan club? hehe. JK.

I really need to spend more time over here in the MBR 1600 (which I'd love to own, been feeling limited lately with the BR, but I can't afford it, nor can I justify it, as I don't play that many instruments)

And btw, when someone as talented as you compliments little ol' me I am humbled with a smile.

Thank you.

Amazing!!!

Wow, everyone, I am just floored by the wealth of positive comments, many of which are not deserved.  I hope I didn't seem too whiny or like I was begging for praise, because that wasn't it.

48, you are too kind!  A different league?  I highly doubt it.  Some of the guitar players in here would shred me to death.  Literally!

Greeny, thanks for all the kind words.  To hear that there is even a hint of Beatles or Blunstone in anything I do is about as great a compliment as I can hope for!  True, I think TomH86 and I have similar tastes.  I think he mentioned something about "Odessey & Oracle" a while back -- it's in my top 5 greatest albums of all-time, without a doubt!  Again, the different league thing does not apply.  I spent 1000s of hours working on this shit, maybe that's all it is.  See, I haven't posted any rough mixes or early drafts yet (well, except for "Nieve Azul").  There is definitely a rough side to my work, and you'll hear it when I post some newer stuff.  I have evolved a bit over the years, it's just that you didn't hear how shitty my stuff sounded in the beginning.  If you did, you'd never say I was in a "different league," I assure you!  Again, though, thanks for taking the time to write out such thoughtful words.  I couldn't get that YouTube link to play or work -- what is it?

Thanks, 0Jimi0!  The drums are live drums, mic'ed up and played the old-fashioned way.  I was a drummer before anything else, and that's why I needed a BR-1600 -- for the 8 simultaneous inputs so I could mic my drums!

indierik, I don't know what to say other than THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU.  These are the kinds of compliments that really keep me going, keep me inspired to keep pushing forward, despite the fact that I know I will never get rich and famous with this music.  Hell, I don't want to; I would settle for just being able to somehow quit my day-job!  These are the types of things you don't just say to be nice, and that makes me really excited about the fact that my music may be somewhat appealing to people other than just my wife and myself.  The feeling is mutual, by the way, as I hope you have seen my posts about your two latest songs.  By the way, I am FAR from being classically trained in anything.  On the contrary, I am completely self-taught in all instruments and do not read a lick of music.  I have played on stage in numerous bands as the drummer, but never achieved what I would call "professional" status.  Thank you again so much for all of the incredibly kind words!

ORH, thanks a lot!  Glad to hear you've checked out the myspace as well.  I am kind of behind on the page.  Glad you heard a bit of prog in it -- it's my dream to be able to say I am a "prog" band, but I don't even have remotely the skills of any prog artist, so I have to sort of "fake it" when I can.

Thanks, Satchwood, that means a lot coming from a guitar god like you!

Well Bosko I just got to this one, I was off the site (off the computer) for a week, so now I can finally listen.  You have done it again, even better.  What the hell can I say here, this is one of the best songs posted on here.  the middle piano part is handled to perfection.  The mix sounds pretty darn perfect.  I love the instrument mix.  I am inspired by this song.  I am blown away by this song. I am going to listen to this song at least 100 times and see if I can learn anything here.  This reminds me of early ELO in its scope and instrumentation and production.  Very cool, very inspired.  I am a fan big time.  What the hell else could you do here (other than a monster guitar solo - just kidding, I am guitar fanatical, but it is not needed here).  Your songs  sound too English for you to to be a Texan!!!

And if we where to get halfway to what you are giving us here we would be very happy !!

This could have been a Lennon/McCartney song !!

You guys are going to make my head so big, I won't be able to walk through my front door.  Thanks, Satch, osckilo, Bluesberry, Kody, and Geir!  Now I feel like a fool for crying about the lack of comments in this one.  I guess I should probably wait a couple of days before I start freaking out that everyone thinks I suck.  I let my true insecurity shine through, and it's a little embarrassing.  But fuck it, we are who we are.

Satchwood, my home studio isn't all that cool, although the walls are awesome because my wife (an amazing interior designer) painted them with a smooth chocolate brown and sky blue rectangular design.  It's just a little room consisting of the following:

I would LOVE to see the equipment everyone else is using.  Is there already a thread for this?

Bluesberry, you again flatter me with overt use of the word "perfect," which I do not deserve.  I love ELO!  As for adding a guitar solo, you sometimes forget that not everyone is a crazy guitar god like you who can just rip off shredding leads that would kill a herd of wildabeest.  The "lead" guitar during the entire outro of the song is as much of a guitar "solo" as you're going to get from me!!  By the way, I am a Texan, but I'm English at heart (and by ancestral descent, as a matter of fact).

Kody, you are too kind!  That is a BIG compliment to me, as I struggle to try and make my sound as "professional" as I can within my limitations.

Geir, you're right, that's exactly what I'm going for!  Prog-Pop!  Thank you so much!  As you know, any comparison, even remotely, to The Beatles blows me away.  If my songs include even half of a percent as much talent as one of Ringo's turds, I am happy.

Being new here, it will take a while to catch up (if that ever happens), but I'm glad I stumbled upon this one. What a great piece of music, Bosko. Very Beatles to me as well. A real sweet suite, I might say (though I probably shouldn't). I love the changes it meanders through, the classical interlude, and the off-beat story. Excellent structure and composition, as well as the performance. Well done.

Goodness, this is the first day I have been over to the big boys area for a long time, and what an eye/ear opener! As others said, there is so much going on in the MBR forum it's hard to spend time in the other forums, no slight intended. This has blown me away more than your other stuff. Take Madness, Flaming Lips and Genesis and stuff them in a blender and you have Bosko's unique take on the world!

This has great production values as seems to be your forte, but the song is really, really inventive and intriguing. I was just wondering why it faded so soon and then you went off in a whole diffferent direction. Killer. You said you were not a stunning instrumentalist on another thread, but your keyboard playing sounds pretty darned good to me.

I seriously don't have any feedback apart form the fact I REALLY enjoyed this on so many levels. Very cool.

Cheers,

Nigel

Wow, thanks, Nigel! :o ;D  Those are some very kind words, and I appreciate them greatly!

I think I faked my way through the piano fairly well in this one, haha. ;D  I think one of the musical skills I do have is to make the most of my very limited musicianship talents.  The idea is to make the music sound as if it was supposed to be played that way, even if a classically trained pianist with 40 years of experience were playing it, rather than to expose myself as a hack who really doesn't have a clue what he's doing on the keyboards!  I guess I managed to get away with that in this song!

Thanks again!

Yup, you got away with it! I'm pretty much the same as you - wouldn't call myself a stellar musician in any department but 40 years of playing guitar, bass and fiddling with various other stuff teaches you tricks that mean given the right song construction I can sound pretty good. I think that's what you pull off - you play to your strengths and the overall effect is of a very polished piece. And you have that creative, innovative spark that really appeals to me - I rate that a lot personally. Greeny has that as well, and it's a great talent.

The piano on this sounds as good as most you would hear on pop/rock works, OK you may not be the next Keith Emerson but it still sounds pretty good to me!

Cheers,

Nigel

Nope, certainly not Keith Emerson.  But like you said before in a previous post, perhaps having prog-esque musician prowess can be a bad thing at times.  So maybe it's not so bad having marginal skills.  Maybe, deep down, I really don't care that I can't play like Emerson or Rick Wakeman because ... dare I say ... maybe I wouldn't want to even if I could.  Maybe I want to do exactly what I am doing!

BSZ - First time in the BR1600 MP3 section for me, and I simply chose the song that was at the top of the list.
Any Studio Engineer or Recording Studio Owner hearing this will be weeping in desperation. They will realise that they will never have your custom, because there's no need to. If someone had told me that this was lifted from the longer-version of Jeff Wayne's War Of The Worlds, I wouldn't have doubted them. Though I have to admit that I didn't recognise the song from your introductory comments. I don't know where this piece will fit in your overall Concept CD, but I wouldn't mess around with what you've already laid-down. The playing, singing and production are faultless, and it will be a pleasure to listen to the full work to see how it all fits together. Very well done.

I think my concept album is more along the lines of The Flaming Lips' Yoshimi ... as opposed to a more literal storybook-type album in which everything is laid out perfectly in front of the listener.  The main reason for this is because I wanted every song to be able to stand on its own and not just be a puzzle piece.  Also, I wanted to do something in which the listener has to kind of dig in and root around and really make an effort to figure out what's going on.  Lastly, a lot of the songs are metaphoric and aren't just about the literal things being sung about.

At the same time, the lyrics for many of the songs could also be considered fairly straight-forward about what's happening in the story ... provided you listen carefully.  This one actually has no intended double-meaning and is straight-forward about the events taking place.  But I will admit that unless one actually knew ahead of time that the album was about this subject, they'd have to listen pretty closely to find little clues in the lyrics, such as "Space Police" and "superterranean."  Plus, the description of Samaanya herself is pretty odd, so that's a clue.  Also, the name Samanya (I added an extra A) is an African Bantu unisex name meaning "the unknown one."  I used an African name due to the mysteries of the Great Pyramids and theories that they were built and/or designed by aliens.  (Prog enough for you, Nigel? :D  HAHA, kidding! ;D)

Details: it's song #3 on the album; the unnamed main character (abductee) is on the space ship (which has already been established in a previous song).  Samaanya is his abducter; the abductee is talking directly to Samaanya here.  The break in the middle -- completely different from the rest of the song -- represents a sort of "dreamy" state, a kind of drifting in and out of consciousness.  At the end, he questions if this is really happening or if he's just dreaming -- something I would imagine anyone in that situation would do.  To coincide with the theme of possible insanity, I play the same chord over and over until the song fades out, with somewhat random "chaos" being played over it -- OK, it's not "Revolution 9," but I wanted it to stay sort of melodic at the same time.  Perhaps if I post the lyrics, it will help:

Samaanya, look what you have done
Waiting for the "Space Police" is causing mania
For in my heart, I know they will never show
Despite my wish, I know they don't exist

Samaanya, superterranean
Your head is a chrysanthemum, arms like accordions
Or so, to me, it seems; is this a bad dream?
Am I just bored or out of my fucking gourd?

This song is iPod bound.  Great job.

I'm always impressed when someone can do a concept album.  I'm pretty much a one-song-per-concept kind of songwriter.

Re. Alien Abduction: About a month ago, my stepson was playing a video game called Destroy All Humans (http://www.destroyallhumansgame.com/).  I was minding my own business, when he blurted out, "Yea!  I love the anal probe!"

Thanks, Ted!  I am proud to have made your iPod!  However, you now owe me 99 cents.  KIDDING, of course! ;D

For me, it was both a blessing and a curse to do the concept album.  On one hand, I didn't have to think too much about the lyrics, as I knew exactly what each song would be about.  On the other, it got tedious and was in danger of being too repetitive to have every song be about one thing.  I tried to mix it up the best I could; I hope it worked out. :-\  You will soon know, as it is almost finished!  If I could only get my ass out of this forum, it would be done! >:(

PS: I love Destroy All Humans!

You my friend , have impressed me so much , to the point that i will go out on a limb and say i would compare your style to the great man himself Mr lennon and that late sixty's time period , contrary to what you say about yourself and your abilby , Samaanya for instance , is such an amazing song , wonderfull in fact , it embodies every emotion and feeling that i have of that sixty's period.

Hi there

I really like your piano playing.  It reminds me of Elliot Smith especially the "Figure 8" album which to me means good.  The idea of a concept album about aliens sounds interesting.  Do you listen to the Pixies?  Their singer had a heavy interest in aliens.  Most notably on the song "Motorway to Roswell".  I'll be listening with interest for more of your sounds.

Adios for now

Steve it even worked for us older members! I kinda forgot just how good this was. The first time around I was one of the 22 views/no comments guys. I was entirely too intimidated to post on this thread.

Now after nearly a year of musicianship under my belt, I'm reminded of my limitations. This is was and always will be a stunning piece. The production quality is beyond belief. I've recently become a 1600 owner (thank you craigslist), I know that my unit severely lacks the talented producer operating it.

Bosko, this is a stunning piece.

I'm not sure if I had to comment to this. I feel it's another league indeed. See it's posted last year lol and I never even noticed it. I can not talk about the sound as it seems flawless so all I can say is that I loved the song. Alien abduction or whatever the subject - it doesn't matter. It was a fantastic song.

Wow... I missed all that has transpired with Bosko... from my lack of lurking and being on the site. Well this is mighty impressive. A movie backer... a gigging band... an awesome song with the some of the best production that has come out of this site.

As far as the recording is concerned... I know Bosko wanted some honest input... well I listened over and over... I wanted to say something about the drums being too far in the background... but for this song I think it is really the perfect mix. I have nothing to critique because I know I couldn't possibly add anything constructive other than it is truely great. What a tune... Hope your doin well Bosko.

Great vid also
