Title: Let's jam with JAMMR
Post by: Hook on March 22, 2020, 07:49:57 AM
Ok so I downloaded this
https://jammr.net/ (https://jammr.net/)
It's free and easy to download but I don't know what the hell I'm doing. There is a forum so I hope to find some tutorials. If someone want's to download it let's see if we can jam.

I did just realize that I have no interface, perhaps my laptop mic is enough to start?

Hook, I've downloaded it also and like you, I don't have a mic interface for my laptop. Just the tiny built in mic on my laptop. If this is viable, I'll have to look for an inexpensive interface/adapter that allows me to connect a mic to a USB port. I also can't  create an account because it keeps rejecting my password choice which seems to fit their guidelines ?

Farrell,

I'll try to download tomorrow. On my MacBook. I also have no mic, so will be relying on the inbuilt one.

I'll have a crack at this too.

I have my XR18 plugged in - so it's open season!

I can't install it without admin rights on my work MacBook so will have to try a windows version. Unless it works on iPhone.

Update: Zoom does NOT work for a jam. Laggy and the sound peaks with seemingly minimal input. Even three people trying to jam was a debacle. And we're all in London.

Shame.

Experiment concluded.

Now, what about Jammr. In our jammies.

Zoom might not work for jamming, but would still be ok for a drink in our virtual Songcrafters bar.

I will download it too.

I jam all the time using REAPER and reaNimjams (it is a plug in under FX in REAPER DAW) it is live jamming and works damn good.  Spend hours jamming with folks from all over the place.  You will need and audio input device to plug your gear into so as to be heard.  Some real pros show up.

Now that sounds like fun! My son is conducting online "socials" (aka drinking sessions) with his hockey club. Seems to be working for them.

I use Reaper too, and I have seen the reNimjams but not had a look into using it - I may do that this weekend.

I tried installing a using Jammr - it blue screened my PC, it was very glitchy when it ran, I couldn't hear any others, I couldn't create new jams. I have removed it again.

I'm using a number of on-line meeting tools at the moment, Zoom seems to be the best I have used, but I think that latency will stop it from being a successful jam tool.

Let me know if you need help setting up a session and I can walk you through it.... its not as simple as I would like it to be.

I like this because it uses free open-source software (for Linux, Mac or Windows) and you don't have to sign up with any website in order to use the software. Instead, one of the collaborators agrees to run JackTrip in hub server mode and all the other collaborators connect to the hub server. And you can simultaneously run Zoom, for example, so that everyone can see each other. But you'd mute the audio in Zoom so that all of the audio goes through JackTrip for low latency. It's a bit complicated to set up for the person acting as the server because they have to deal with port forwarding, but it's fairly simple for everyone else to connect as clients.
