Title: Can't play any tunes but through Soundcloud
Post by: Blooby on August 15, 2017, 06:22:12 PM

The title says it all, and it's only a Songcrafters issue as far as I can tell.

Windows 7. I assume it's a Flash issue but can't suss it out.

Any notions?

On August 8th, I disabled all Flash players at Songcrafters. They should no longer be needed since recent versions of all the major web browsers support HTML5 audio and our HTML5 jukeboxes and MP3 players seem to be working well in most browsers.

Which browser are you using?

I bet you're using Internet Explorer version 10 or older. Am I right?

I just found some old code that checks if the browser is IE 10 or older and if it is, forces it to use the flash players (which are currently disabled). I'll correct that now so that you can use the HTML5 players. However, I can't guarantee that they'll work right with such an old browser. I think the reason that code exists is because we had trouble with IE 10 and older when I first created the HTML5 players years ago, so I decided the simplest solution was to force IE 10 and older to use the Flash players.

You really should switch to a more modern browser. I recommend Firefox (https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/).

Okay. I've changed the code so that IE 10 and older are no longer forced to use the Flash players. So, hopefully, they should work in HTML5. If not, let me know and I'll see what I can do to fix it.

I'm actually a Chrome guy, but whatever you did magically worked.

I had a feeling you would swoop in to save me. I know you're Clark Kent, and I won't even tell on you.

(blushing)

Thanks a lot.

I lied. It worked once. Back to not working.

Damn.

Try clearing Chrome's cache. There was a problem reported to me on August 4th where Chrome wasn't working with our players. I checked it out and found that toggling the Mute button usually fixed it. So I then changed the code to ensure that it started out un-muted when the page first loaded and that seemed to fix the problem. But if your browser's cache still has old copies of some pages at Songcrafters, you might not be getting the fixed version. Clearing the cache should solve that.

When I was researching the Chrome problem, I found a few pages where people mentioned that Chrome sometimes had problems with longer songs but was okay with shorter songs. So if you find that some songs play but others don't, pay attention to the song lengths to see if that might be why.

I have cleared the cache, tried IE, Firefox, and went back to Chrome. The tune I'm currently trying is 3:51 at https://songcrafters.org/community/index.php?topic=27137.0 (https://songcrafters.org/forum/index.php?topic=27137.0)

Thanks so much for trying. I am still stymied right now.

I reset Chrome to original settings, and the player worked for 30 seconds. Back to where I started.

Argh x2.

So if I click on the mp3 link at the bottom of the player, a second player opens in a new window. Can't type while I listen, but I have my workaround for now.  Going to sleep now.

As always, thank you much, 64. Your truly tireless is help does not go unnoticed.

Going to sleep.

I'm experimenting with Chromium at the moment. It's the open source version of Chrome. Like you, I found that Mach's "Gospel" doesn't play. Neither does Facemask's A Hard Rains Gonna Fall (https://songcrafters.org/forum/index.php?topic=8991.0) at 5:34. But ODH's Hot For Teacher (https://songcrafters.org/forum/index.php?topic=27156.0) at 1:39 plays just fine in Chromium. Does it work for you in Chrome?

But all three songs play just fine in Firefox and all of my other browsers (Midori, Epiphany, Qupzilla, and Rekonq). The longer songs only seem to be a problem in Chromium/Chrome.

The link below the player only appears if the song is hosted offsite (at alonetone, for example). The "Download" link at the right of the player should do the same thing and it should work for all songs, regardless of whether they're hosted offsite or at Songcrafters. The difference between clicking the Download link and clicking the Play button is that the former doesn't stream, so the song won't start playing till you've downloaded the whole file. For average length songs with a fast internet service, the delay for downloading the file might not be very noticeable.

I think I'm on to something. I noticed that the jukeboxes work just fine in Chromium. Every song plays, every time. For example, try the Songcrafters on the Radio (https://songcrafters.org/forum/index.php?action=festival;sa=Radio) jukebox. Every song in that jukebox plays perfectly in Chromium. And some of them are quite long. One song is over an hour, yet it plays just fine in the jukebox. I'm expecting that it will work in Chrome too.

However, when I click the Comment button in the jukebox to go to the corresponding topic, then try to play the song there, some songs play but many do not. I'm going to have a good look at the code to see what's different between the single-song players in the topics and the multi-song jukeboxes. One difference that comes to mind is that the single-song players scan the mp3 file for its ID3 tags to get the song title and artist, but the jukeboxes don't do that. So I have a hunch that something in that ID3-scanning code is causing the problem. Although, I can't understand why it only manifests itself in Chromium/Chrome.

I haven't had any problems playing songs from the players on my laptop. They ALL do stop about 1/2 or 2/3 of the way through on my phone though.  ???  I use Firefox on both my laptop and phone. I have tried updating the software on the phone but still no go.

Made it through 3-4 songs, and now the players aren't working for me again. A tune wouldn't play at 4:09, and one played layer at 4:10. I would say it's a cache issue on my end as well, but I dumped it, and last night ended with me not being able to play anything. I am confounded.

Blooby, can you confirm that the multi-song jukeboxes work okay in Chrome? They work perfectly for me in Chromium. Every song plays every time. For example, try the Songcrafters on the Radio (https://songcrafters.org/forum/index.php?action=festival;sa=Radio) jukebox.

If you get the same results as I did in Chromium, then I'll know that the problem only occurs with the single-song players in the topics and I can focus on that code. I probably won't get a chance to have a good look into it till the weekend though.

Okay
HTML player on Safari (OSX El Capitan) works, but only for around 2 minutes (its random), before it flips back to the start of the song (although the counter/time does not reset) and none of the positioning (back or forward) works, so struggle to hear beyond 2 minutes for any song. The old Flash player worked fine! If I want to listen to the whole thing, I have to download the MP3.
Just my 10c worth....

Looks like firefox behaves better than Safari on OSX - although cannot still use the positioning bar on the player (but back works to reset to the start, forward doesn't work).

Tried Chrome at work today and had same problem with single player. Got home home and saw your message, and I'll be darned, the jukebox appears to be working flawlessly. I made sure to try a couple songs that wouldn't work through the single player.

Again, thank you so much for your efforts. It doesn't go unnoticed around here.

Great! That helps a lot because it means that I can use Chromium to test it. If I can get the single players working reliably in Chromium, I feel confident that they'll work in Chrome too.

I spoke too soon on the jukebox. Songs are stopping about 1:30 in. I wasn't letting them play all the way through before when I was testing them.

I now started getting glitches on the single players with songs not completely finishing and the position bar doesn't show on most. 64 I know you took Flash away so I can't switch to see if it works. I haven't tried Chrome.

Was able to listen to two complete songs on the secondary html player today (both under four minutes). I then tried another at 4:12 (https://songcrafters.org/community/index.php?topic=27170.0) and it would play for half a second or so and then stop.

Not trying to be a doink. I just figure the more information you have, the better you'll be able to attck it.

As always, thank you much.

Thanks for all your hard work 64.

I'll be working on the player today and tomorrow and hope to improve it.

I don't think it's related but it might be. Part of my strategy for the players will be to remove a bunch of unnecessary JavaScript code and simplify the code for the players. Since this should reduce the overhead for loading a page, it could potentially improve the performance of the site which might help with uploads. While investigating the problems with the player in Chromium yesterday, it did appear to be caused by a lost connection. So it could be related to upload issues.

I'm noticing songs over 4 minutes are the testy ones. This includes the artist jukeboxes as well. Hook's played fine with the secondary player, and Hooper's rejected me (including through his playlist).

Well it's reared it's ugly head once again. Everything has been fine, all the players were playing and complete songs were completing. I use Firefox they did one of their dreaded Friggin' Fire updates about two days ago and now songs stop at random lengths. I was letting the Latest songs jukebox roll and the only one that made it all the way through was
"See the stars New version (Kenny Mac and OldRottenhead)." The others gave me a red Error message in the top left of the player then stopped not long after, no re-start or advance to the next song, just silence.

I noticed a thread about iPads not playing either.

I've been having trouble too - everything was fine until the site improvements and then I couldn't get anything to play all the way through with either player. I thinks it's better today though.

I haven't been able to listen to anything unless I download. I made the switch to chrome on my phone. I guess I will also have to install chrome on my Home PC and access songcrafters to hear music from now on. Firefox has become a headache, but it is only here that it does this. I can't figure it out. I have a lot of catching up to do.
