Title: Hurricane Season
Post by: Mach on July 31, 2017, 05:53:12 AM
Although it's just a depression (#6) at the moment, you guys batten down the hatches here in Fla. for some heavy rains.
Hopefully it won't form any further and breeze on through quickly.

There was no water on the shelves so I went next door and bought rum. My biggest concern right now is whether the Gibson will be delivered on time. Having said that, I can be a real idiot at times.

Be safe.

Destruction is massive in the Caribbean islands below the U.S.
Florida looks like it will be hit hard all the way up the middle of the state.
The Euro and GFS forecast models predict a westward shift
after the northern turn that will hit Miami head on.

All you guys here in Florida that are riding it out...Keep safe.
There are mandatory evacs being issued above and below us in Jax/St. Aug
for certain flood zones. I live in a flood zone in Clay Co...nothing issued yet.

Once again, stay safe

Went out around 4:45 to score some gas. All the local pumps are dry, and the ones by the Interstate a couple miles away have a couple hours wait. Police are at most of the operating gas pumps to deal with the folks waiting in line. It's not that things are getting out of hand, but the people trying to evacuate from farther south are doing so at a snail's pace. The gas shortages aren't helping. I guess some tempers have flared here and there. My local gas station/convenience store (unbelievably) had fresh donuts. The guy behind me got one, held it up in front of him (with proper reverence), and said, "We may be screwed up, but this is still a great country." I love that store.

School was canceled for Monday, and the governor made a decision for our county last night regarding today's closing. We rescheduled an open house that was to occur last night, and when the county got wind of it, they said we couldn't. Can't understand the thinking, but such is life. My school is a special-needs shelter so the administration must take shifts there. I must head over in an hour or so, but I thought I'd first dine on this delectable looking donut.

I didn't venture to far out in search of gas, but of the 10 local places only one had 93 octane and diesel left.
We have 4 five gallon cans for the generator when the power goes out. I filled my gas guzzling truck so I will
be heading out for some other supplies. Donuts are not on my list. Batteries, forget it. I was told at a couple
of stores they expect shipments tomorrow.

I have all the guitars in cases on the beds. No where to sleep, but hey they won't get wet if we get flooded.
Hopefully, the storm surge won't be too bad since the eye will be over land. Surge warnings for SE Georgia.
Winds are going to be a big problem here. Well at least I can turn off the A/C for a while.  ;D

Spent the day preparing the house, mowing lawn, putting all my lawn furniture into the garage, etc. Not sure why I'm not worried but I'm just not. Went to the store for batteries...no luck. We've got food, water, candy, wine and rum...think we are set. My wife and my 14 year old are freaking out a bit, not sure what that means for me come Sunday. Stay safe my friends!

Finally found gas today. Didn't have to wait too long either. Some woman literally tried to nose her car in to edge me out. I got out of the car to politely ask her to do the right thing and she complied. People suck sometimes.

They don't have the correct generator for our school (it was sent to Texas for Harvey). I was given no contact numbers so it took me about an hour to get through to the correct person. Because of the number of shelters now open in the area, folks are spread thin, and it's starting to be a bit of a cluster. Not horrible yet, but I'm concerned to say the least when the power goes as my school is designated a special needs shelter. I will say there seems to be less panic in the air than yesterday, though. I think a lot of folks got their water and food so it seems to be many evacuees just trying to head north.

Hook, not sure how much better it will be up here, but the door is open if you and your family wish to bug out.

Rum and Coke tonight, boys.

Is the replacement generator you on a treadmill?

My liquor cabinet has some bottles that need to be emptied so I can refill them with water.  I'm on it.  Fortunately, I have reinforcements coming in from the coast tomorrow in the form of evacuees.  We should be able to refill a whole bunch of bottles before the storm hits.  This is the can-do spirit that will see us through.

Firstly my brothers, you and yours - stay safe. We are rooting for you, Florida is my most favourite place in the world and I love the people. I'm not much one for the higher powers, but am hoping that you all dodge this bullet!

Us Brits have no comprehension of this type of weather. This is why you will see Brits mesmorized by a bog standard Florida storm. We had a 'hurricane' once the UK, 1987 - and there were wind gusts of 80 mph overnight. It was quite messy next day, but that is about it! We are still talking about it - but this was really a nothing burger as compared IRMA.

I was facinated by the concept of storm snacks - I've never heard that before, and you guys hunkering down with Rum! Still guys - please let us know that you are all safe once it passes.

Hopes, prayers and everything crossed - hunker down, protect yourselves, ride this one out and stay safe.
We will be watching and hoping and thinking of you all.

i echo bruno's request, that you all let us know you are safe and well, when irma passes.

also as bruno says we have no comprehension of such storms, the worst storm i remember in Scotland was at hogmanay 1967 the night before new years day 1968. we got winds at about 100mph and our bedroom window got blown in, my dad was really upset that two paintbrushes he had left to dry outside on the living room window sill, got blown away. and yes we are still talking about it today.

at least weather forecasting is a bit more helpful nowadays and there is plenty of warning to prepare for the worst.

am glad to see you are all looking out for each other, am thinking of you all now and am concerned for your safety, so stay safe.

My brother stayed behind in the Miami area with his in-laws. Winds have picked up to 35-40 mph (gusts) down there. I'm scooting through all the classrooms and unplugging computers, got 50 decks of cards from the dollar store for folks in the shelter, and we just fed a neighboring shelter. Roads seem calmer today. Things couldn't be quieter here weather-wise for now.

Sustained winds for the storm now about 125. Hoping like hell the land starts weakening the storm rapidly.

The rum didn't do it for me last night so tonight it's scotch. Must find batteries and break out the Micro BR this eve. Tomorrow afternoon to Monday afternoon is the sketchy period for Hook, Lurker, Mach, and myself. FYI, BrettBob is also a Floridian. I believe he is on the east coast about 2/3 down so I'm hoping he will be spared the brunt.

Peace.

I feel for you guys in Florida. been watchin' it all unfold on the Weather Channel.
Not sure where each of you are in Florida, but as off now, it looks like the extreme SE (Miami area) will been missing the absolute worst of it. Still gonna be a mean and nasty storm. The west coast is gonna really take a beating. So many elderly, retired folks in that area. Gonna be a nightmare, like Harvey was for the folks in Houston and Beaumont. 4 FEET of rain!!??!! OMG...can't even fathom that. I'll take our blizzards anyday compared to floods and hurricanes. Hope the forecast is all overblown and you guys all get thru it safe and without any devastation. Gonna be a bumpy 48 hours.....and one hell of a massive cleanup. Good luck...

EWC lives just down the road from Blooby, but he don't like to say.

We're about as ready as we will be.  I'm a little nervous but it doesn't make any difference.  We'll just take what comes.  No choice, really.  We're having family over for tacos tonight.  My wife's aunt and uncle are up from an area of Fort Myers that can expect a storm surge over nine feet.  Two of the venues that Blooby and I play in Cedar Key may not be there after Irma passes.

My (almost) 85 year old mother insists that she's prepared to stay alone in her house.  Our nonagenarian neighbor lives alone and is all set.  Both of these tough ladies are hearing and visually impaired, yet they may be better suited to handle the situation than most in our community.

We'll keep you posted.

We're getting rain and some gusty winds, but the real deal hasn't started yet.  The predicted path has jumped to the east, so Hook is closer to the business.

I have two sisters-in-law in Key West.  Both reported in just after 8:00 AM EDT.  They say that they are okay.  No details.

I did I as much as I prepare so the next logical thing was to scrub my tacky mushroom lawn ornament (and no, that's not a euphemism). I'm sure my neighbors were hoping it would blow away. I think I'm going to paint it once it dries to bide my time (amanita muscaria colors somehow seems appropriate on this surreal day). It's got to be better that perseverating on the newscasts.

John, any more details from your in-laws? I didn't know they were staying.

Winds and rain picking up. Looks like my in-laws are joining our little crew here...

Worst of it is still quite a few hours away. Right now I'm watching Disneys Hercules with my littles trying to keep their minds off what's to come. Filling the tubs and pitchers full of water and we turned my oldest daughters room, Much to her excitement, into our safe room. We'll spend the night there together. Right now still waiting.

Some wind and rain bands have come through but nothing scary yet. I just heard it made landfall on Marco Island hopefully it will begin to weaken as it rides up the peninsula. So basically just waiting now.

We've had a weather warning issued here for strong winds and related disruption overnight. They're warning of sustained winds of 20-25mph gusting to 40mph in exposed areas. Your situation kind of puts that into perspective. I'll be thinking of you all over the next 24 hours.

We just woke up (again), and everything appears to be here.  We have power and water.  Still raining and windy, but radar shows that rain may stop soon.  What remains of the eye appears to be very close.  My mother has reported in as okay.  Friends nearby have lost power, so may be coming for breakfast.  Friends in Jacksonville have retreated to an upstairs apartment.  The river has risen nearly to their doorstep.  I would send a text to check on Blooby, but he may be dreaming about having a romp with his guitars and pedals.  It would be a sin to interrupt that.  I'll wait a while.

Now that was a fitful night. Still having some tropical storm gusts through early to mid afternoon. 50-60 foot limb missed my covered deck by a few feet and a 70-80 foot pine tree snapped in two. The center (no longer an eye really) just passed us. My pedals are safe. The Tube Screamer bunker was worth the $20,000 investment. Was watching Sharknado V at 3:00 last night. It seemed appropriate.

The stray cat I took in is not happy. I don't know how to feed him or get him out without getting my throat ripped out.

Boss tried to get over to school/shelter, but down power lines and trees thwarted him. I'm not going anywhere for a while.

I can still hear by rook get buffeted by small limbs. My neighbor (weird Ed) was just outside with a rake.

I love this neighborhood.

Peace.

Found one gas station/convenience store open (although they were out of gas). I then spied the open liquor store. Got scotch, Guinness, and four pack of Sex on the Beach and Moscow Mules for some variety. Again, I love this neighborhood.

Lots of large oaks down closer to Lurker. Some closed roads and flooding.

I'm here. We are flooded and stranded on black creek. The bridge is closed because the water is over it and the road to get out is about 4 feet underwater. Been running  2 wet vacs for about 36 hours off one generator non stop. Creek is suppose to crest about 28 feet today. No electricity,I finally got cell service. Gotta go for now I  will have more details later. I'm glad you're  all ok after this storm.

Things are tense here. We had to get the rescue team to get my Son by boat and take him to the hospital. He has a very high fever and is really sick. The creek is flowing at around 6 knots (about 40 mph) with all kind of things floating by. Will be out of electricity for about a week  or longer.  Can't go anywhere because the water is rising on road and over the bridge. The water seaping into the house is ground water from the rain. Looks like a long haul here. I just hope my Son is alright.

Man that was quite a blow. Glad you guys are all ok.
Mach they say that your town has the worst flooding in 100 years. Dozens of boat rescues. Awful stuff. What a mess. Naples isn't much better... and the Keys are annihilated. One in four homes completely destroyed. 65% seriously damaged.
Still millions in Florida with no power.... may take a couple weeks to get it all back on line.
Glad to hear your son is ok. That must have been quite a scare. Hope you can finally get some rest.

Mach, what is the latest with Black Creek?
Title: Re: Hurricane Season
Post by: Mach on September 13, 2017, 02:29:17 PM
Well this has been a journey I never want to take again. I'm so exhausted from vacuuming water to keep it from flooding the whole bottom level. Generator has had it. Been running it constantly for more than 96 hours just for vacuums. I haven't had time to take pictures because we have been hard at work with vacuums...vacuuming water sucks! (no pun intended). I tried to get pictures of some of the crazy things floating down the creek, but they would go by so fast I couldn't get to it in time.

I will tell some stories later, but now I need sleep.

Quote from: Blooby on September 13, 2017, 08:17:11 AMMach, what is the latest with Black Creek?

It has gone down quite a bit and the flow is back to almost normal. Part of the bridge on one side has caved in, but the traffic trying to get through on the good side is a nightmare from what I've heard. Helicopters and rescue boats are still around. I think they finally made it down to the North and South prongs of the creek to rescue all the properties that were completely underwater, they were inaccessible for a while because the the debris and so many trees for choppers to get in.

Like I said, no time to take photos because I been working my ass off to keep the house dry as possible...I have a few...no electricity for about a week or more, so maybe we can hook up the generator (if it still wants to work) and see some of the damage on TV. Cell service is terrible. Anyway, gonna go drink something intoxicating and sleep for a while.

Glad to hear your son is doing okay, Mach.

I hear you about vacuuming up water - I used to have trouble with my basement flooding (never more than about 6-8 inches of water, at its worst - probably pretty light compared to what you've been up against), and I learned to respect the power of water. It's incredibly frustrating, and even with the right tools, we're barely a match for that kind of power. Not sure if you already have one, but a submersible pump and garden hose can save quite a bit of the work of vacuuming and emptying, but again, when the water is unstoppable, you've just got to play by its rules.

Rest up as best you can - that will help as you finish up.

I'm so relieved that the water has begun to subside.  We've been pretty worried here.  Our trials are like nothing compared to yours.  I hope you get that rest before you start to clean up.

Take care, John.

Here are a few photos of the road. It's about 4 1/2 feet at the mailbox
and up to almost 6 feet across the the road. I haven't been able get pics
of the creek when it crested to 28.5 feet (record height) because I have
been so busy with the water in the house, my special-needs Son, and all
the other mayhem.

I just now got online to see the wide-spread floodingin our surrounding
areas...devastating compared to our situation...there are so many YouTube
vids and pictures if you Google Black Creek, Green Cove Springs, Middleburg,
Jacksonville, Irma, etc...so many I've seen in the last hour of surfing.

You'll have to tilt your head to see a couple of the bad pics my phone takes.

Thanks for sorting the pics 64G.

Well clean up begins. I finally made it to my Mom's place (in probate) where I stay sometimes. Irma took down some of the old decrepit fence that needed to be replaced anyway. The house seems fine except for a little water damage from shingles blowing up to let rain and go down in the walls. I will have to get in there and see if the insulation is wet.

Blooby, Hook, Lurker did you guys sustain in damage over in Gainesville and Tampa? Hope everything is good.

When the creek was moving with a very swift current we saw some crazy s*it:

Un-Manned Ski Boats, Fishing Boats, Sea-Doos, Docks, Docks with boats attached (one took out the Black Creek Bridge on Clay County Road 218), huge oak trees, Large propane tanks (I thought would have sunk), there's no telling what is at the bottom of the creek. The most amusing thing I saw was a family of ducks on a railroad tie catching a free ride. Wish I could of gotten some photos, but my Son came first and then the house.

I hope you guys didn't get much over and down there where she came ashore.

Mach
