Title: Hooks got a new, used cocktail drum kit
Post by: Hook on February 14, 2017, 06:02:57 AM
This was on Craigslist and now it is not. I jammed with a band last week (as a drummer...I know, right?) &it was a lot of fun. They asked me back this week and I figured I should have my own gear. I got this gor $200 & I dig it alot. It's a Groove Percussion kit and I definately need to upgrade the hats and crash but it's fun to play, standing that is.
Any ideas on micing it to record? Dynamic, condenser, placement, etc.

Looks good Hook,
You're going to be needing a bigger house again soon. :D
Looking forward to hearing them...

Congrats Hook, that's a fun-looking kit!

Rata probably has some of the best practical advice. My generic advice (mostly academic) is this: dynamic mic(s) for anything close to a drum head, and condensers for cymbals & high hat that are farther away.

That said, I have gotten what I thought were pretty decent results recording a friend's drum kit (a long time ago) with an unmatched pair of dynamic mics positioned in a stereo field.

As always, let your ears be your guide.

Is there nothing you can't play? The last time I had a drum kit was one of those Chad Valley toy kits. My granny bought it for me for Xmas when I was 7. My parents LOVED her for that!

Congratulations on your new purchase, mate. I hope you have loads of fun!

Great looking cocktail kit. Congrats on your find Hook. I would use a Beta 52 for micing the bottom of the barrell drum since it acts as a bass and floor tom. Top part any dynamic just be careful of phase issues between to two. Overheads, CAD makes some great Cardioid Condenser mics.

Nothing I won't try to play!

Very cool. When I was younger, I was totally into the huge sets of Peart, Simon Phillips, etc. I am much more enthralled by cool sets like this these days. Very cool score.

Love the looks of this con"trap"tion! That mic kit is worth the money, you may only need one condenser mic and maybe a snare mic, depends on where you're playing. If you're recording with other instruments, a condenser is tough to control, especially if the guitarist is loud.
