Much like the "What are You Currently Reading?" thread, I thought it might be nice to get some suggestions about some cinema.
I'm just finishing up a movie I have been trying to get through this week. I know that makes it sound uninteresting, but I usually get to watch right before doze, and I don't last too long these days before Mr. Sandman visits (wow, that sounded creepy). Anyway, I have been watching
Rush (and not the one with Gregg Allman), a film about the rivalry between formula racers Niki Lauda and James Hunt, directed by Ron Howard. From the description, it would not be something I would seek out, but I am really enjoying it. Great job of plopping you in the seventies. Even the film has a graininess to it from the time.
What have you folks got?

Thanks for the recommendation, mate! I'm going through a lot of films at the moment in my bid to totally and completely avoid watching a single second of Baron Pierre de Coubertin's festival of running, jumping and throwing, which seems to have taken over the TV schedules.
I recently watched this one, a great spoof spy film:

My 15 year old & I saw this last night & loved it. Smart, funny and charming...and often a little tough on the ears.

Thanks so much for the recommendation. I watched this last night and thoroughly enjoyed it. I don't drive & have zero interest in cars, and I have a similar disregard for every kind of sport. So a film about motor sport wouldn't seem like a natural choice for me, but I was riveted by this film. Brilliant!
Not a movie, but since many here live in US, since next Wednesday, Gomorrah will be on the American TV screens
I'm not a fan of crime TV series generally, but believe me, this one is really well done.

The Martian.
I like sci-fi, and normally you have to suspend your disbelief when watching sci-fi films, this though was really believable.
If there's a message I think it has something to do with potatoes and poo.
I can see Gier as a Martian.
I watched "God Bless America" - a very, very, very dark comedy. On Amazon Prime - picked it at random as a film to watch with my mum - erhhhmm, baaaadddd move!
:-)

Just watched "En Man Som Heter Ove" (a man called Ove) starring Rolf Lassgard the original Wallander. I think it is now my all time favourite film. I laughed like a drain and cried like a baby. Is Swedish, I watched with English subtitles. Is a must see, life affirming movie. Will post a trailer when I get to my pc.
here is the trailer

Scott Pilgrim vs. The World.
If you like bands or music or vintage gaming or comedy fight scenes
you have to see this film.
May have replaced Almost Famous as my favourite film.
:)
Does anyone go for the 1 star movies on Prime or Netflicks - just for jollies? I've seen some howlers!
Watched this documentary over the weekend. (Apologies if this has already been shared before...)
Really an eye-opener to help fill in some Rock-n-Roll history.

Although I haven't seen it,
Zombeavers on Netflix was described to me as "sensationally bad." I might have a some time on Sunday morning to give it a whirl.

Here's a little gem I remember from around 25 years ago... it was a one-off TV play about the life of Sir Thomas Beecham, one of Britain's most celebrated conductors. Whether or not classical music is your thing, this is worth a watch just for the one-liners...
When a female cellist incurred the wrath of Sir Thomas, he glowered at her from the podium & said...
"Madam, between your legs you have something capable of bringing delight to thousands. And yet all you do is scratch it!"
Or when a female fan asked him if he would be godfather to her child, he replied...
"Certainly, but why bring God into it?"

Excellent film... just watched this afternoon. Thanks for the recommendation :)
I haven't seen this movie documentary yet, but the album Skeleton Tree is heart rending, the recording sessions for the album where recorded for a documentary and during the sessions Nick cave's 15 year old son died in tragic circumstances.
QuoteAnd One More Time With Feeling is the film that has been released to introduce and to accompany the album. Cave is understandably loathe to let the boors and parasites of the media anywhere near himself or his family, but the film should provide at least some oblique answers to any questions that are actually worth asking.
i want to see this film, but at the same time i don't but i must. (if that makes sense)

I have seen a movie so sensationally bad on paper but so good in reality, I must share.
Sure it's campy, but the writing, editing, and music are great.
It's not a movie so not sure this is the right place. But it is epic and a great story

A few years old, but I re-watched this one last weekend & it's got to be one of the best action films I've seen... ever. Superb cast & a plot that doesn't just rely on all the shooty-bang stuff. Highly recommended.

More a documentary than a movie - on Netflix now. More SpinalTap than SpinalTap, except its real. Damn, this made me laugh, I felt bad about it, but I did laugh .....

spose it doesn't class as a movie, but the new twin peaks:the return directed by David Lynch is totally mental , right up my street, is actually quite stunning.

Yes , great story, and you don't have to be a heavy metal fan to enjoy the film
I suffered through Cold Mountain a few days ago while doing some computer work. And I actually liked it, not sure why I resisted it for so long...
I just watched the full documentary tonight. Interesting interviews.

Damn - that looks real good. Thanks for the heads up.
We went to see this on Saturday...
Very strange and an exhausting watch, wasn't sure what to make of it when it was over, but certainly has you thinking. I needed a good stiff drink afterwards! :)

Went to see "First Man" with Ryan Gosling. Have to say I really enjoyed it.

A Star is Born - obviously. It was good, I was still crying driving home in the car afterwards.
There was 1 line in it from the Barbra Streisand and Kris Kristofferson movie and they'd 'updated' the plot. Bradley Cooper had had singing lessons for 18 months and learnt to play the guitar for the role. Both acting and singing from Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper was excellent.
Almost finished Breaking Bad on Netflix. I think a lot of people must have already seen it... but if you haven't it's excellent. Before that We watched Mad Men also on Netflix.... also v good.
can thoroughly recommend the professor and the madman.

haven't seen it but, looks good from the trailer!
"Sneaky Pete" on Amazon Prime is great...
