Title: The Song Association Game
Post by: T.C. Elliott on February 16, 2014, 08:58:10 PM
Stolen from a friend (Tim Wille) over at FAWM this is kind of a cool way to make a unique song playlist.
I mention a song, and you mention something that can connect that song to another song - be it stylistically, thematically, lyrically or just via your own personal experience. The next person goes from there.
Please, if it isn't obvious, tell us how it connects. For instance if someone listed "When the levee breaks" - Led Zeppelin and the next person said "American Pie" - Don McLean you might add the line of lyric in the song that mentions the levee.

The debut electric piano of Manfred Mann's "Blinded By the Light" make me think to the piano of Supertramp... Same rythm, near sound... Sorry, no you tube link, so :
The original version of that song was called "Bottle of Wine". It was written by Tom Paxton (in 1963, I believe) and was a big hit for The Fireballs in 1968.
Like, er, maybe I'm being dumb, or something, but, er, huh-huh, like, what's the connection, dude, huh-huh.

Hideous on the edge of a precipice The cavity filled up with forgetfullness Beyond there's no retribution only war Her society overtly... The meaning of existence Can't be supplied by religion or ideologies Left to all our creativity we must find The real significance that wouldn't be mystified The sense or non-sense that will emerge on a precipice Is only the impact of the creative activity
doh! ;D ;D

How about from Gospel to Extreme's "There is no God", from the most underrated albums ever "Waiting for a Punchline" and probably the best band that I've ever seen live.

Manfred Mann covered Dylan's "With God On Our Side" on their 1965 EP "The One in the Middle". They also covered Dylan's "Mighty Quinn" in 1968 which was a #1 hit in the UK and Canada (#10 in the USA).
I didn't realize that, and I have the album! I guess I saw the names Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page and didn't pay any attention to the rest of the band. I just looked it up on Wikipedia and was surprised that Canadian musician Paul Shaffer (leader of the CBS Orchestra for the Late Show with David Letterman) played keyboards on "The Honeydrippers: Volume One". And Dave Weckl played drums. That's quite an all-star band.

In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida is a mistransliteration of "In the Garden of Eden", so here's Arlo Guthrie's version of "The Garden Song" (written by David Mallett).

A Spoon Full of Sugar" - Julie Andrews>>>>>> Sugar>>>>>>Sugar Babe by Steve Miller
and I might add I saw this guy a couple years ago, he is in his 70s....a bad to the bone guitarist (plays psychadelic to blues to rock with precision), still sings well....the crazy thing was, in that concert there was no bass player...the dude on the keys (same guy in video) did the bass parts on the keys and sang and the other keyboard parts...
"One Way to Rock" is clearly a Sammy Hagar song. As a card-carrying member of the Van Halen Fan Club, I will have to respectably ask you to reconsider this as "Van Halen" song.
JK :)

Absolutely a Sammy tune, but they did a great rendition. A happier time for Eddie and Sammy... :)

Wow! Plini was amazing... Anyway... The Merry-Go-Round - "Live" -> The Fabulous Rhinestones - "Live It Out To The End" (Kal David with one of the tastiest guitar solos I've ever heard)
holy smokes...that is friggin fantastic Frank..... I had the good fortune to see Sammy Hagar just after he came out with that song in SF.... and then again with Van Halen around 1985.... loved him in both...and I saw VH in 79 with the other version...both great concerts...
