Title: Name the Tune from song snippets
Post by: 64Guitars on August 13, 2012, 05:35:50 PM
After reminiscing over the Song Intros (https://songcrafters.org/forum/index.php?topic=3765.0) topic, I got the idea to have another Name the Tune game where we all post very short snippets of songs and everyone tries to guess what they are. The snippets will be so short that I don't think there's any danger of copyright infringement. They can be intros to songs, and I suspect that most will be, but that isn't a requirement. You can use any part of the song that's recognizable and unique (but hopefully not too recognizable).

As with the other recent games, only one guess at a time and wait till at least two other people have posted guesses before you submit another.

However, you're welcome to upload as many snippets as you like. You can use Audacity or any sound editor to extract the snippet, then save it in MP3 format at 192kbps. Don't forget to clear out the MP3 tags so people can't just look there to find the song title. If you're using Audacity, I'd recommend going into Preferences / Import/Export and checking the box that says "Show Metadata Editor prior to export step". Then everytime you export, the metadata editor will pop up and you can simply click the Clear button to clear its data.

And don't put the song title in your filename. Instead, I'd suggest you start with your username (or an abbreviation of it) followed by a number. People can use the filename as a reference in their guesses.

To get things started, here are a half-dozen snippets. I think most of them will be easy.

Correct answers:

64G-001: "A Hard Day's Night" by The Beatles - oldrottenhead
64G-002: "Winchester Cathedral" by the New Vaudeville Band - oldrottenhead
64G-003: "Vienna" by Ultravox - oldrottenhead

I'm not sure if they're too hard or too easy and people can't be bothered stating the obvious. Or maybe it's because they're in the new Games board and people aren't looking there. After oldrottenhead pointed it out, I agree that the first six are probably way too easy. But I thought some of the others were reasonably challenging. Maybe too challenging?

And a great cover it is too! You guys nailed that opening chord, and the rest of the song is just as awesome.

Correct.  The most awesome recording of guitar noises ever! I love that recording. In interviews, Jimi Hendrix has said that Terry Kath was one of his favourite guitarists. It's easy to understand why.

Quote from the album's liner notes:

"FREE FORM GUITAR was performed on a Fender Stratocaster guitar through a Showman amplifier equipped with a twin 15 bottom utilizing a Bogan P.A. amplifier as a pre-amp.  No electronic gimmicks or effects were used in the recording of this selection, the intent being to capture as faithfully as possible the actual sound of the performance as it occurred."

Here are a few new ones. They should be easy (I think).

Please remember:

Only one guess at a time and wait till at least two other people have posted guesses before you submit another.

1) 64G-015 - "Peaches" by The Stranglers - identified by Johnny Robbo
2) 64G-016 -
3) 64G-017 - "That'll Be The Day" by Buddy Holly and The Crickets - identified by Groundy (title only)
4) 64G-018 - "Peace Train" by Cat Stevens - identified by T.C. Elliott
5) 64G-019 -
6) 64G-020 - "Part of the Union" - Strawbs - identified by Johnny Robbo

And nobody ever guessed these two, so I'll give some clues and see if anyone can figure them out.

64G-008:
By a 70s prog-rock band from London. This snippet is from the tail-end of the song. The song is the title track from an album that was released in 1975 and was also released as the B side of a single in 1977.
Time:

64G-014:
By a very popular British band from the 60s. I always thought this was a pretty famous single, but I just looked it up on Wikipedia and they say it flopped badly in the UK. It peaked at #51 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #36 on the Toronto CHUM Chart in May 1967. The guitarist left this band to form one of the most successful rock bands of the 70s.
