Title: Be careful about what you post publicly
Post by: 64Guitars on August 07, 2012, 03:07:29 PM
It's easy to make the mistake of thinking of Songcrafters as a cozy little community of trusted friends and forgetting that all of our posts are viewable by anyone in the world with internet access. So I worry when I see people posting too much personal information. For example, when people announce that they're taking the family on vacation for a couple of weeks. It's fairly easy for criminals to track down where you live and rob you while you're on vacation.

The following article got me thinking about this. A girl in Australia posted a photo of a wad of cash and within hours her home was robbed.

http://www.geeky-gadgets.com/girl-posts-cash-pile-image-on-facebook-house-gets-robbed-within-hours-28-05-2012/ (http://www.geeky-gadgets.com/girl-posts-cash-pile-image-on-facebook-house-gets-robbed-within-hours-28-05-2012/)

Be careful what you post. The whole world is watching, including many criminals.

I agree.  I constantly see people putting posts on facebook like "I have lost my phone so here is my new number 555 555 555" for everyone to see.

I do have one question... why is a girl in Australia counting a wad of American dollars and why would her grandmother's savings be in $USD?

If it is her savings, this is what has happened to it over the last 10 years because of the USD/AUD exchange rate.

That's quite a drop in the USD/AUD exchange rate!

Quote from: Migs on August 07, 2012, 05:32:57 PMI do have one question... why is a girl in Australia counting a wad of American dollars and why would her grandmother's savings be in $USD?

I wonder if the story originated from an American news source who didn't have the actual picture from facebook so they just inserted their own photo? For example, this article from New Zealand has a different photo which includes both Australian and US dollars. That photo is credited to Dean Purcell, which I assume is not the name of the Australian girl who posted the facebook photo.

Hang on... I just found the source of the first photo...

Just for the record (if anyone's planning a little "visit" to my place), when I'm at the cabin, I'm not far from home and I think I have a touch of Alzheimer, so I make frequent trips back home to pick up a guitar or a set of strings or a book or just to check on my pet black mamba ::)

Good point tho 64G. I've been open about this in the past, now I usually just tell it when I'm back from a trip.

Which reminds me. I was gone for a while. I went to FAWMstock III in Wisconsin and had a great time with fellow songwriters. We should have a Songcraft I or something sometime so we can all meet up.

At any rate, I had a great time but I'm back now as you can tell by the way I'm posting things.

I have a bucket tied to a string over the door and whoever tries to break into my house is gonna get wet...and then eaten by a lion!

Hey, where I am, I'm so poor I'll rob the robber!! And If I'm at Tony's we have enough firepower to hold 'em back for an entire afternoon! ;D

But seriously, I agree information gets shared quite freely here, and it's a good idea to watch what you are posting.

Seems to me that it would be awfully difficult to arrange. A hall or something would have to be rented and the costs shared by the attendees. We wouldn't know how big of a hall is needed until we have a firm commitment from everyone who plans to attend. But few people will commit to it until they know how much it will cost and exactly when and where it will be. Plus there's the question of availability. People have jobs, families, and other commitments. Many members simply wouldn't be able to attend no matter how much they wanted to. And what about transportation and accommodation? Our members are all over the world. I think very few could afford to travel to another continent for a Songcrafters get-together.

It's a nice idea but I can't see it working.

Smaller meetings are more practical. If a few members live in the same area and can arrange to meet at someone's house or a local bar, for example, that could work. They can discuss the arrangements with each other via PM and tell us all about it when they get back.

Or if someone is going to be traveling to another area on business or holidays, they can make arrangements to meet up with fellow Songcrafters who live in that area.

Maybe I'm reading between the lines too much but it seems you really want to do this 64. I say we choose a central location like.....Tampa, FL....T.C. can cover travel expenses for the members, 64 you take care of the hall & I'll make beenie weenies!

I'll go if T.C. is covering expenses!
 ;D

That would be pretty cool if we could have a convention some day.
Florida would be great place (or Geir's cabin) - either way!

Amazing how a thread can change into a 'where I like to drink' discussion.

So what about Leeds, great for an afternoon real ale session!!

The Aldephi sometimes has acoustic sessions on a Saturday afternoon too!!

I'm leaving my house for a couple of days... Here's my check list.

1. Don't feed my pet Kodiak Bear... His name is Giggles... I don't feed him when I leave... he likes to snack on intruders....

2. Don't feed my dog... I don't feed my dog either... His name is Mikey... He keeps Giggles company... and usually provokes giggles into attack mode.

3. Don't feed my cat... Her name is Beany... And she's got a temper when she's angry...

They are all loving animals when properly fed... But if yer the sorry SOB that wants to rob me... well I guess you get what you deserve... If you value your life as much as I value my family and home... DON"T MESS WITH US!!!

This message was brought to you by Ruger... Let's go hunting ATM!!!

Indeed ;D

I have beds/mattresses  for ~10-15 GOOD friends ;) and enough instruments for all (15 stringed instruments + some homemade percussion, a synth AND A COWBELL ;D) I must admit it would be rather crowded with so many, but I hope to have at least one songcrafter over at the cabin this fall !

You make a good point, but.... We had around 20 members total at our shindig. There were 1319 different songwriters who posted at least one song during FAWM (in february) assuming no-one had any alter egos (which I'm sure there were at least a few.)

I think you're probably correct, though. It is more feasible to have smaller groups get together and share some fun. It's still fun to think about. And I just took my week and spent my vacation money on my wife and I attending this other deal so it'll be a bit before I'm ready for a road trip, most likely.

Write her a nice song :)

(And then, in an effort to convince her that you're not singing about some other silly pretty girl *, try doing all the cooking, washing up, and cleaning for a bit...)

Yeah, and in a half-hearted attempt to bring the thread back on topic -

If you do end up singing about some other pretty girl, and let's face it, it just cannot be avoided sometimes -

DO be careful about what you post publicly...

There's all sorts of people watching us... her mother, your wife, your wife's mother, her even... and let's not forget her husband, and some bloke in the USA that you've confided in, the taxman, your next door neighbour who could hear you recording it while your wife was away, your kids and ex-wife you haven't seen for 15 years, ex-band members, work-colleagues, the ticket inspector on the train...

The list is endless...

It's not just them unknown buggers who want to steal your assorted piles of money and your collections of guitars and rather fetching 80s jackets... no...

On the internet, it's the people that you actually know who are likely to end up reading stuff that you didn't really intend for them to hear :D

On a general level, I am always shocked by the amount of personal info people share - especially on social media. And it's not just the criminal fraternity that make use of it.

Imagine if the government were logging all of the following information about you:

Your political opinions
Who your friends are
Which of those friends you interact with the most
Your whereabouts
Your taste in music & TV

There would  be an outcry about intrusive surveillance, right? Well here's the thing - if you ARE on social media (and I'm not) - all of this info is being logged and compiled into a continuously updated dossier on you. The difference is that, unlike a government, you can't vote Mark Zuckerberg out of office if you disagree with what he does with your personal data. With a government, you can.

I'm not some tin-foil hat wearing conspiracy theorist, I just find it bizarre that the people who are often quick to complain about "the state" intruding into their private lives with CCTV and so-on, are often the same folks who willingly surrender all kinds of personal info to a giant, unaccountable global corporate behemoth like Facebook.

Here's a clip from one of my favourite sitcoms, The IT Crowd...

Enough said :)
