Title: Splashtop OS
Post by: 64Guitars on March 02, 2011, 10:29:58 PM
I was just reading an article about Splashtop OS and I thought some of you Windows users might be interested in giving it a try.

It's a very small linux-based operating system which you can install very easily alongside Windows to give you the option of booting straight into a web browser instead of waiting for Windows to boot up. Many new laptops already come with a similar OS pre-installed. But if your computer doesn't have it, you can download Splashtop OS for free and install it on your computer. It will come in really handy when your computer's turned off and you just want to check your e-mail, or the latest posts at Songcrafters. Although Splashtop OS is based on Linux, there's nothing new for you to learn because it boots straight into the included Google Chromium web browser, bypassing the traditional Linux desktop environment completely. And it doesn't affect your Windows installation, so you can still boot into Windows for your normal usage. You'd just use Splashtop OS when you want to get into a web browser quickly without waiting for Windows to boot up.

Here's the Splashtop OS website: http://www.splashtop.com/os (http://www.splashtop.com/os)

If you give it a try, please post your comments about it here to let others know what it's like.

Dual boot? Does the boot loader slide under the windows bootstrap I wonder...

Most versions of Windows have dual-boot capabilities built-in but most people never use it because they only have one OS. I think Splashtop OS just uses the built-in dual-boot capabilities of Windows so that you get the standard Windows boot menu when you start the computer, with Windows as one choice and Splashtop OS as another.
