Title: iPhone/iPad Music Apps
Post by: 64Guitars on October 15, 2011, 12:05:04 PM
I know that several members here are fans of the Korg Kaossilator, so I thought you might be interested to know that Korg has just released a new iKaossilator app for the iPhone.  £6.99 / $9.99

I was looking for a similar app not long ago after a friend came to see me from London and had one. I'm especially interested in the drum grooves you can use on them.

Although I did see a used one local for 80 bucks (said it was like new) and would have gladly bought it for that price had I the extra cash.

For $10 that iKaossilator is an absolute steal.  I like the feel of the actual kaossilator a little better but sheesh that cost me about $200.

Will be interesting to see what the price goes to after November.

The only down side is that every man and his dog will have one now.  :(

I've purchased the iKaossilator. It's cool as hell, but so far it's a toy more than a tool.  There was a project I wanted to do a while back that this would be perfect for, though.

Then it gets a bit "meh".......

I've used the cello the most (on thumbjam) and love it. The rest I've still not used really. My last song (songfight! entry) has a nice cello actually. Pretty happy with it.

Animoog has been updated to version 1.01.

http://moogmusic.com/news/animoog-version-101 (http://moogmusic.com/news/animoog-version-101)

New functionality:
• Background audio support
• Record module now has a 4 beat count-in with optional beep (configured on Setup page)
• Also on Setup page, a new Random Preset button (warning: dangerously addictive)
• Timbres page: 'Preview' button, select timbres silently or select & preview them audibly
• Multi-mode knobs are now easier to adjust
• Network MIDI session now enabled by default.

Bugs fixed:
• Memory leak on switching page views was causing crashes

• MIDI note to KB display mapping is now correct
• Handles MIDI NoteOn w/ velocity 0 as a NoteOff.

If you don't own Animoog and you own an iPad, get it quick

The iPad version was originally introduced in October for $0.99 but it was only a 30-day offer. On the bright side, it was supposed to go up to $29.99 after the 30 days, so $9.99 is still a bargain.

Here's a great bargain for anyone who has an iPhone.

TC Electronic is offering their PolyTune iPhone App for just 99 cents (£0.69), but only until January 19th (next Thursday).

AppStore US:
(https://songcrafters.org/64guitars/BR/Images/Flags/us.png)  http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/polytune/id364009203?mt=8&ign-mpt=uo%3D4 (http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/polytune/id364009203?mt=8&ign-mpt=uo%3D4)

AppStore UK:
(https://songcrafters.org/64guitars/BR/Images/Flags/gb.png)  http://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/polytune/id364009203?mt=8&ign-mpt=uo%3D4 (http://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/polytune/id364009203?mt=8&ign-mpt=uo%3D4)

PolyTune lets you strum the open strings of your guitar or bass and instantly see which strings are flat or sharp. For example, in the following screenshot, string 5 (A) is sharp and string 1 (E) is flat. This provides a very fast way to tune your guitar or bass since you don't have to check each string individually.

PolyTune for iPhone works with the original iPhone, iPhone 3G, iPhone 3Gs, iPod touch and iPad.

Remember, this offer ends January 19th (next Thursday), so hurry if you want it.

I'm sure there are some cool music apps for Android too. But it seems that all the big names (moog, Korg, TC electronic, etc) are only writing apps for iOS devices, unfortunately.

I thought you had an iPod touch?  PolyTune will work with the iPod touch, according to their web page.

I've just bought myself an iPad , I'm totally gobsmacked by everything about it , having been an owner of an iPhone for about two years i really didn't  know what to expect , but my God , this is the best thing since sliced bread , most of my iPhone Apps are universal , so now I'm  able to use them on the iPad , one that I'm really interested in at the moment is OnSong , this app is unbelievable , for stage use , or just to just to jam with your friends , its there in front of you clamped to your mic stand , it is a writing tool , a place to keep all of your songs , it scrolls at the speed you choose , to read your songs off , all the band can synchronise the song sheet in different keys ( as long as they have an iPad on stage ) check it out

musicradar.com is currently running a poll which asks "What's the best iPhone/iPad music making app in the world today?"

http://www.musicradar.com/news/tech/whats-the-best-iphoneipad-music-making-app-in-the-world-today-522215 (http://www.musicradar.com/news/tech/whats-the-best-iphoneipad-music-making-app-in-the-world-today-522215)

So far, the most popular choice by quite a lot is iMASCHINE by Native Instruments. Almost tied for second place are Apple's GarageBand and Moog's Animoog. The next most popular apps so far are NanoStudio by Blip Interactive, BeatMaker by Intua, iMS-20 by Korg, and iKaossilator (in that order). You can view the current results of the ongoing poll by clicking "View Results" just below the "Vote" button.

iMASCHINE is mainly a drum pad emulator. It displays 16 drum pads which you tap on to create patterns, as shown in the videos below. Plenty of drum kits are included. It's available for $4.99 (£2.99) at the App Store.

I just got an iPhone (yay!), and it's already transforming my musical landscape. A seriously cool set of tools for enhancing (NOT composing...) my songs.

The first App I got was ThumbJam. It's more or less why I got an iPhone, ever since it was demo'd to me by Tharek in Mike's garden. It's a great piece of kit - the cello is so f*cking awesome, but I've also used the string ensemble, trumpet and flute on songs. It sounds very organic for a bit of software. Lots of possibilities - GET IT! All it needs is a line-in to the MBR. Simple.

I've shied away from Garageband, as I like recording on the MBR.

But I also have:

Vultus (not as good as ThumbJam, but it has a sitar. Some useable sims).

Steel Guitar by Yonac. sounds good but yet to be used on a recording. Nashville country slide.

Gibson Learn & Master
- fantastic free guitar app with a shit hot tuner - worked great on my uke! Lots of lessons, links and other cool guitar stuff from Gibson.

Others...

Argon (by Icegear). Tricky to work out how to use, but a very nice sequencer and synth when you get the hang of it. Makes my train journeys fly by. Kraftwerk in your hand.

I also have a Harmonium and some Tabla loops. The best drum machine I've found so far is 'Shiny Drum' but I'm still looking into that area.

Some interesting stuff on SonicState's "Sonic Touch" web show, epsiode 7.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1_rv93zVTko

"Shredder" is an iPad app that functions as a monophonic pitch-to-midi converter for guitar as well as a guitar synth. Seems to have some limitations but it's not bad for only $14.99 (£10.49) $7.99 (£5.49) (for a limited time -- the priced dropped while I was typing this message). The Chordmaker feature looks useful. It allows you to play single notes on the guitar and get chords from the synth. I've never seen that on a monophonic pitch-to-midi converter before.

AppStore US:
(https://songcrafters.org/64guitars/BR/Images/Flags/us.png)  http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/shredder-synth-for-guitar/id485623166?mt=8 (http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/shredder-synth-for-guitar/id485623166?mt=8)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mNmlAZFIXTc

There aren't a lot of good music apps for Android but "TouchDAW" looks pretty good. It offers control surface emulation & MIDI tools for £3.34. There's also a free version.

https://market.android.com/details?id=de.humatic.tdaw (https://market.android.com/details?id=de.humatic.tdaw)

They also mentioned an app called appsfire which helps you learn about all of the great free and dirt-cheap special offers for music apps.

http://appsfire.com/ (http://appsfire.com/)

From their website, I couldn't see how to look at just the music apps. But the Sonic Touch video shows him doing that on the iPad app. You can also get the app for your iPhone.

Just wanted to mention that Thumbjam 2.0 has a feature where you can hum to create melodies with the sound presets. Fiddled with it briefly.  Must be super quiet as even tiny extraneous noises causes lots of artifacts, but the possibilities of a recording situation seem exciting.

Apologies if this was mentioned previously.

This drum synthesizer for iPhone, iPod, and iPad looks interesting. You just tap on your desk and the iPhone's microphone picks up the sound and uses it to trigger realistic synthesized drum sounds from the app.

From their website:
"Impaktor can produce a wide range of tones, from acoustic, like Tabla, Djembe, Marimba, Cymbals, Metal bars to electronic or industrial sounds."

"Over 90 presets available, more coming soon"

I know there are several fans of ThumbJam here so I thought I should let you know that they have a new drumming app called DrumJam.

£5.49 UK
http://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/drumjam/id530162824?mt=8 (http://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/drumjam/id530162824?mt=8)

http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/drumjam/id530162824?mt=8 (http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/drumjam/id530162824?mt=8)

I think the price is going up soon. So, if you're interested in getting this, better to buy it now rather than wait.

This video from sonicstate.com demonstrates DrumJam, as well as Impaktor, which I mentioned earlier.

I watched that vid a few days ago and grabbed both drumjam and impaktor today. But I've spent the rest of the day writing songs and updating my iphone and haven't had a chance to play... yet.

But I will.

Cool! Let us know what you think after you've had some time to play around with them.

What interests me about Impaktor is that you can actually play the drums. Hydrogen, BR Rhythm Editor, and similar programs are great because they're free and make some pretty good drum sounds. But you can't play them; you can only program them. The great thing about Impaktor is that you don't have to buy any special hardware to use it. You just tap on your desk. I do that all the time anyway. If I could use it to trigger drum samples, that would be great. Unfortunately, I don't own a smartphone or tablet and have no plans to get one, so iOS-based apps are no good to me.

I'd love to get an electronic drum kit but I can't afford one right now and I wouldn't have anywhere to put it anyway. I've often thought of getting some sort of electronic drum pads like the Korg padKONTROL (http://www.korg.com/padKONTROL), nanoPAD2 (http://www.korg.com/nanoseries2), or Alesis Control Pad (http://www.alesis.com/controlpad). But I also need some sort of small midi keyboard controller to use with my computer. So my current thinking is to get a keyboard with drum pads built-in. Maybe something like the AKAI MPK25 (http://www.akaipro.com/mpk25) or the new M-Audio AIR 25. Although, I suspect that they'll be too expensive for me.

I might treat myself to something at Christmas. Given my finances, I'll probably have to settle for the AKAI MPK mini (http://www.akaipro.com/mpkmini):

I saw it on offer last year about this time for $69.99 but I missed out. If I see it for a similar price this year, I might get it.

Post by: T.C. Elliott on October 04, 2012, 07:44:01 PM
I used impaktor for a few minutes and its cool. I was enjoying playing and experimenting with using hands, fingers pens to tap with and tapping on a book instead of a desk and whatnot to get different tones within each instrument. Not huge differences, but the wedding ring on the table certainly made an impression.

It's a bit noisy even when not playing because it uses the mic and my recording closet.. erm studio, sounds like crap. But it's usable more than just a toy, imo. But my timing is off just enough to be very frustrating.

Drumjam I used only for a few minutes... it looks to be cool. I think if you start rhythm track first it'll be pretty useful. Well, it'll be good to an existing track if you map it out or know where to add your instruments etc. It looks more useful in a recording if you're looking for a polished rhythm track from an app... at least to me.

And finally, i broke my friggin iphone so unless I can steal the wife's ipad it might be a bit before I get to play with these apps again.

I just bought drumjam today. I played with it for a while today of course without reading instructions. Who does that? Anyway it`s easy to figure out yourself. If i was to pick one i`d pick the drumjam because it has more different drums and sounds and you can tweek them.

When you record a loop you can take any instrument and drag and drop in and out to any part of the stereo field to any deciple too. It is quite a phenomenal App for the price!!

I got instant inspiration and wrote a song with it tonight. I need to focus on originals more. I do like the Impaktor too for the reason of just putting down my phone on the table and drumming on my knee or whatever. Glad i have them both actually.

So thumbs up!!

Okay downside to Drumjam. Only 4/4 timing for loops and it seems everytime i use it and bring up the app again it won`t work for me unless i reboot my phone. Kinda annoying and hope that is fixed in an update soon.

I meant Drumjam

Till now .....

Have just played on the animoog - F**K Me - this is totally awesome. Check this bad boy out ..

The keys are wonderfully intuitive - quite brilliant - and the sound ... wow. I've found a reason to buy and iPad! This is the next generation of K-oscillator!

Just you wait brother, it's worth the money for thumbjam alone. This looks super cool, with your love of drum loops check out drumjam & impacktor. It looks like on impacktor, which looks freakin awesome, you can make your own loops just by banging on the table! You should also look at the geosynth videos, there here somewhere. The guy from Dream Theater uses it and it's set up like a fret board, looks very cool and quite intuitive. You'll have alot of fun with an ipad.

It includes 69 Timbres extracted from a vintage Minimoog Model D analog synthesizer, and 213 presets.

It's available now as an In-App-Purchase in the Animoog store for $6.99. I wonder if the price will be lower for Black Friday (tomorrow).

Additionally, in celebration of the Thanksgiving holiday all Moog iOS applications are available at reduced prices:

That $28 price seems pretty good for all you get. Not sure I would use it much but I want it. I got the ikaossilator for$10  back in Dec. seems cool keep meaning to try and write something with it. I've been playing around with the Windows version and I think it's pretty cool.

http://www.singlecellsoftware.com/caustic (http://www.singlecellsoftware.com/caustic)

It includes 10 different synths:

There are a bunch of effects available too.

I think it will work with any iPhone but it's optimized for iPhone 5.

They've also produced some great tutorial videos for it, making it easy to learn:

I don't understand. Should this be an alternative to Sampletank? If so, how could this be, claiming more than 1000 patches and 60 drum kits in (only) less than 40 Megs?

Sampletank is several HUNDREDS of Megs big...

Sampletank is big because it uses big libraries of sound samples. But SOUND Canvas isn't a sample-based synth, as far as I can tell. Instead, it generates its sounds in real time using simulated oscillators, filters, etc.

Actually I think sound canvas uses soundfonts, which as far as I know is samples (although small).

It's the day I've been waiting for (since I updated to iOS8 last year).  Fingerlab have finally come through with a new version of the DM1 drum machine which doesn't distort.

I've got my drum machine back, yay!

I have gone a little crazy at the moment due to app gas. I am now considering the kaossilator for i phone. My intention is to get the app, then off load the hardware version. But, Is it any better than the hardware version, is it the same.? I like the real one but if the app one is the same or better then the other one can go.

Love the app gas! I knew you would like thumbjam brother, it's changed the way I approach every thing, songwriting, producing, I'd like to figure out a way to use it live through my loop station. I've enjoyed the ikaossiolator app but I do feel now like I've just about explored all the options with it. Still I got many songs out of it and feel very satisfied with the purchase. I have a yellow kaossilator I bought used a while ago a played around with it once. I didn't take to it quick enough and have explored it since, I even thought perhaps it was damaged. I think I'll put it in my studio thus morning to mess around with later. If your looking for atmosphere and sound effects check out TC Performer, it's got a huge bank of sounds and is extremely cool. Animoog is also incredible & drum jam continues to be a staple for me along with garage band. Cassini synthetic is also cool
Rock on brother!

Crazy stuff Hook. I got another one by Propellerhead called Figure, I like it too and I got it free ( I think it's free anyway) I can't believe this stuff, that TC performer looks great too. I don't know what to do with the Kaossilator 2 or the kaossilator mini (red one) it seems like they may be made redundant by all these other cool apps I have.

The apps I have seem to do what the korg hardware stuff does anyway, as a bonus the apps are way easier to use, sound great and are way cheaper than the hardware choices. Oh yeah, I forgot,  I got that addictive micro synth one too, fantastic and so easy to get on with. I had a micro Korg but sold it, the micro synth does for what I need and it was only 3 quid.

I will probably sell the little Korg units, get an I pad and throw all the guitars out ( only joking about the guitars)
These apps and stuff are real cool but not as cool as guitars. All these apps sound great on the BR80 line in by the way, I tried some straight from the phone through my headphones, the sound level nearly took my head off. Only problem now is running out of space on the phone.

I don't use the phone for much only calls and a bit of wifi when out and about, but boy am I glad my sister let me have it.

Steel Guitar app for iOS from Yonac is now free for a limited time.

You can also buy the 'Whole Enchilada' IAP for UK£3.99.  – I did :) it gives a lot of extra guitars/amps/FX and a recorder

I've only used the real one for one evening when a friend was over from England with hers. But I've used the one on the iphone a little bit. I like it, but not enough to get full use out of it. I think they are comparable in abilities etc.,   I just wish they had a lot more rock drum patterns in it. I also tend to record the bits and mix them into other guitar based recordings. So I don't really use it as a stand alone work horse.

It also says it will record changes in volume & filter settings in the synths in real time, which is good.

I agree. And there's a version available for Windows and Mac that's completely free (although not supported). I've played around with it in Linux under Wine and I was quite impressed.

http://www.singlecellsoftware.com/caustic (http://www.singlecellsoftware.com/caustic)

Scroll down to the bottom of that page for the free Windows and Mac versions.

Of course, if you're using iOS or Android, you should purchase the appropriate version for your device. It's only $9.99 and I think it's well worth the money.

Here are a couple of videos. The first is just a quick promo. The second demonstrates how to use Caustic.

Sorry folks. We'll have to file these apps next to the nano BR (https://songcrafters.org/forum/index.php?topic=18100.0).

I found the pictures of the BR-80 and BR-800 apps on Dribble (https://dribbble.com/about) which is a site for web designers, graphic designers, illustrators, etc. These BR mockups were created by Jason Kirtley (https://dribbble.com/jasonkirtley) of Louisville, Kentucky. As far as I know, they're nothing to do with Boss. Although, Jason describes himself as a "Web and mobile app designer with 10+ years experience", so who knows. Maybe he's working with Boss on a new app. Although, if he was, I would expect that he'd be bound by a non-disclosure agreement and therefore not able to post his pictures on the web. And if he was developing an app on his own, he'd need to get an agreement with Boss to use their design and logos, etc. So I'm guessing he just made these mockups for fun. But who knows. Maybe Boss will see his designs and decide to create a real multitrack recorder app. And if they see the comments in this topic and on Jason's pages, they might realize that there's a demand for it.

https://dribbble.com/shots/215378-Boss-BR-80-iphone-app (https://dribbble.com/shots/215378-Boss-BR-80-iphone-app)

I just noticed that he also has a picture of the "Zoom R-iTrack digital recorder iPad app".

https://dribbble.com/shots/357034-Zoom-R-iTrack-digital-recorder-iPad-app (https://dribbble.com/shots/357034-Zoom-R-iTrack-digital-recorder-iPad-app)

At the top of the page, he says "iPad app/digital recording app concept for Zoom. Having fun seeing this coming to life." That sounds to me like he's actually working with Zoom to create a real product, so maybe the BRs are real too. On the other hand, his Dribble posts for both the Zoom and the BRs are dated 2011. If they were real, you'd think we'd have seen them by now.

UK: https://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/model-15/id1041465860 (https://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/model-15/id1041465860)

It seems that you need a very recent iPad or iPhone to use this app. But for those who happen to have a suitable device, this could be an amazing app.

"Requires iOS 9.0 or later. Just keep reminding yourself that the hardware version would cost you 82,100 nok!  ;D

I'm glad you like the app and I can't wait to hear what you'll do with it.

Moog on!

Pano tuner, also free for Android and iphone. I find it to be the most acurate tuner ever. I can set it on my stand with a loud audience of 50+ kids and it picks up my guitar/uke/mando/etc. just fine. It chromatic so it works great for my hammered dulcimer and my auto harp also. I dig the look of it too.
Rock on!

Mine's on iPhone 5 so no new Alchemy for me either.  Which is a pain because I've got the old Alchemy synth on there and it is a wonderful thing.

This new app from Sweden makes videos from your music files. Might be useful for songcrafters who don't have a video camera but want to have some sort of video to go with their music.

I've become Apple-Free, Android doesn't have the same selection of music apps.

Shame really, I'm not sure if it's to do with the way that Android platforms are architected.
