  1. Big Sky (2:57)
I was saddened to hear of Chris Sievey's (Frank Sidebottom) passing. He used to send me encouraging messages via myspace regarding my songs. He particularly liked when I sang about looking up at the stars. So messing on my Juno-Di, I came up with this in dedication to him. Whilst working on the song, I also found out that an old work colleague, Willie Clark, had passed away too. So that also influenced the lyric. Hope it's not too maudlin but uplifting.
  2. Hey! The Sun Came Out Today (3:31)
After writing "Weatherbeaten", the sun came out today, so I wrote this one.
  3. Look in the Mirror (3:37)
I was involved in a worldwide collaboration with some friends and, during a break, I hit some keys on my Juno-Di and this happened. Also, as a result of this song, I decided to do this solo album. This was the final song.
  4. Dance With Me (3:29)
    Trumpet: Alfredo de Pietra
    Drums: Mike Fife
Written after a hard day's work very quickly at the Juno-Di. Additions of trumpet via guitar synth by Alfredo de Pietra and drums via a kaossilator by Mike Fife.
  5. Jeffrey's Fridge (3:21)
Messed about with the Juno-Di and this happened.
  6. All of my Songs (3:16)
A song about songwriting and inspiration. Where it comes from, I don't know. Maybe that little bird on my shoulder.
  7. Opporchancity (4:38)
Trying to find my way around my Juno-Di and this came of it. Wordplay and title inspired by Rikki Fulton.
  8. Weatherbeaten (4:13)
It is a typical Scottish summer day here today; pissing rain and dark, dark clouds. It has been for most of the summer, so far, whilst our friends in the south have bathed in heatwaves. We get the occassional flicker of sunlight but by the time you get the barbecue lit, it's pissing down again. So here we have anither yin inspired by the Scottish weather.
  9. To Go (2:55)
This was the first song I wrote using me new Juno-Di, so I kept it simple. I think it's about learning and growing.
  10. Looking for Words (3:17)
This song originally was an instrumental piece. Someone suggested I write a lyric for it. This proved to be very difficult as I hadn't intended it to be a song, so the lyric is basically about trying to find inspiration as a lyricist.
  11. Too Close to Call (3:37)
Written shortly after the UK general election whilst all the big boys where hiding behind closed doors in private discussion trying to create a coalition government.
  12. I Am In Love (3:09)
Words and music by Geir Alfsen.
As part of songcrafters.org tribute festival, where we covered other members songs in tribute to them, I choose this one by Geir Alfsen. Geir kindly gave me his permission to use the song on my first solo album.
  13. Stagefright (2:47)
I got my 8 year old daughter's £10 ikea guitar oot fur a wee go and shat masel. Billy Connolly bites yer bum.
  14. Boom! (3:27)
Was messing about with different patches on my Juno-Di and this happened. It's all about the stress of everyday modern life and trying to keep a lid on it without exploding.
  15. A Song for Geir (3:53)
Geir wrote a song and I wrote this in response.
  16. Stagefright mkII (2:46)
A reworking of "Stagefright", but this time on a proper guitar. The original version of this song was done on my daughter's £10 child's guitar purchased from ikea a few xmases ago. On this version, I borrowed my mate Stix's legacy led30ce electroacoustic. I didnt have a battery for the pickup so I recorded via the onboard mic on my Micro BR. Though it's a better guitar, my playing/strumming is still quite childlike. I'm not sure if it's any better than the original version, but here it is anyway.

Lyrics

Big Sky

hey look at that big sky
it's as far as we can see
and will you step up to the plate
and face what's coming your way
with your head held high
with your head held high

hey look at that big sky
don't it make you feel small
just remember everyone you've touched
and loved
will have a memory of you
when you stepped up to the plate
and faced what came your way
with your head held high
with your head held high
you made a difference
you left your mark
with your head held high

hey look at that big sky
it's as far as we can see
but i will always rememember
i will always remember

Dedicated to Chris Sievey and Willie Clark. R.I.P.

Hey! The Sun Came Out Today

hey
the sun
it came out today
yeah
it caught us all by surprise
i had to take my jacket off
and i even had to loosen my tie

but i kept my jacket
on my arm
just in case
the sun
was teasing us

like it often does
when there's not a cloud in the sky
except
that one
and it doesn't look
so very happy
being so far away

it looks so forlorn
as it heads away
over the horizon
but don't feel sad
for it
will return
to torment us another day

ach!
here comes the rain
well i'm glad i brought my coat
i new it wisnea gonnea last fur long
aye
the wind changed
direction
happy days are here again
well at least if you're a cloud
hey!
the sun it came out today
yes
it caught us all by
surprise
hey the sun came out today

Look in the Mirror

Did you ever
Catch your reflection
In the mirror
And realise
Just who you are
Did you not even notice
You didn't even notice

Immune
To what's around you
Can't you take
The blinkers off
Indifferent
To all
But you
Alone

Did you hear
A single word I said
Are you even
Listening
Your back is up
Bristling
Bristling
With rage

Cold
To all around you
Why are you hiding
What are you hiding
A pain
So deep
So terrible
You can't let it out

Look in the mirror
With open eyes
Look in the mirror
Yes that is you
Looking back
Take a look
In the
Mirror!!!!!!

Dance With Me

Its cold outside
As the planets align
But the sun still shines
Through the ice and clouds
Theres a fire in my soul
Turns me inside out
Makes me wander
Out of time

Dance with me
In the cold spring rain
Walk with me
In the cold
Take?.
My hand
And dance with me

The thaws been a long time
In coming this year
Soon the warmth
Will rise once again
As the light flicks your skin
And touches you deep
You feel the passion
You feel the love

Dance with me
In the warm spring air
Walk with me
In the sun
Take?.
My hand
And dance with me
dance with me

Jeffrey's Fridge

come lay beside me
oh the dead can dance
my cuppeth runneth over
with mouth foam

take your pick
from any shelf
make your choice
from jeffrey's fridge

have a last cigarette
as i pour you some red
oh the drill can dance
with funnel and bleach

take your pick
from any shelf
make your choice
from jeffrey's fridge

i'm dressed to kill
youre thrilled to death
please hold still
catch your breath
it'll be your last one

take your pick
from any shelf
make your choices
from jeffrey's fridge

my time with you
so funereal
control the object
of my desires

take your pick
of any bone
make your choice
from jeffrey's fridge

come lay beside me
oh the dead can dance
my cup runneth over
with mouth foam

All of my Songs

All of my songs
Come from the heart
Oh and that little bird
That flits onto my shoulder
And whispers in my ear

All of my songs
Come from experience
The things that happen
In my day
And in my world

I sing the words
They appear from nowhere
I sing the words
They must come from somewhere
But I don’t know
And I don’t care
Just as long as the words keep coming

All of my songs
Come from deep within
I open my mouth
And they come out
They’ve been waiting to escape

All of my songs
Are written by someone else
Not me
But that little bird
That flits onto my shoulder
My muse

I sing the words
They appear from nowhere
I sing the words
They must come from somewhere
But I don’t know
And I don’t care
Just as long as the words keep coming

Opporchancity

If you had the opporchancity
Would you
Would you pursue
If you had the opporchancity
Would you
Would you pursue

Would you pursue

Your innate fotunacity
You hang on in there
Baby
Baby
baby
You hang on in there
Baby
Baby
baby
Baby
Baby
baby

what is the chancability
of that happening……….
Odds or evens
Even odds
what is the chancability
of that happening……….
Odds or evens
Even odds

Latent persononitty
Who’s that guy…….
Who’s that girl……..
If you had the opporchancity
Would you
Would you pursue
Would you pursue

Weatherbeaten

the nights are drawing in
quicker now
the clouds are heavier
they're black
swollen
and fit to burst
at any moment
but they will wait
yes they will wait
until i step out through the door
ill prepared
for what the day
might have in store
for me

the only thing predictable
is nothing is predictable
well not round here
well not round here anyway
well summers
been and gone
i blinked and i missed it
yeah i blinked and i missed it
my ruddy sanguine complexion
wasn't caused by the sun
not by the sun
you see
i'm weatherbeaten
yeah i'm weatherbeaten
by the rain and the wind
not by the sun
no not by the sun
cause we don't see it
round here
i'm weatherbeaten
by the rain and the wind
and occasional hail
but not by the sun
we dont see it round hear
the clouds are heavy
and black

To Go

You’ve been waiting for this moment
For so long
And now that time
Has finally come along
You don’t know what to do
With yourself
How to start
Or where to begin
So many choices
So many ways
To go

Try learning to walk
Before you run
Just stick to the basics
The rest can be learned
You don’t know what to do
With yourself
Where to start
Or how to begin
So many choices
So many ways
To go

So now you are here
What are you gonna do
Are you gonna get up
And play
You’d better find out
What to do with yourself
Where to start
And how to begin
You’d better choose
One of the many ways
To go

Looking for Words

standing alone
lost in deep contemplation
ignoring the passing
of time
stuck in the moment
with no point of reference
searching for something to rhyme

looking for light
at the end of the tunnel
looking for something to say

waiting for meaning
to spring from the silence
hoping the words will arise
words
the words

soon they come forth
like a stream or a river
babbling out
like a curse
with no rhyme or reason
they just keep appearing
not ever knowing
their source

looking for light
at the end of the tunnel
looking for something to say
the harder you try
the harder it gets
the harder to set yourself free

standing alone
looking for words
standing alone
looking for words
looking for words

Too Close to Call

Sitting on a knife edge
Tipping the balance of power
It’s a cliffhanger
It’s too close to call
Too close to call

Will it make any difference
When we count up them all
Put them together
See where they fall
Behind closed doors
In smoke filled rooms
It’s too close to call
It’s too close to call
It’s too close to call

Sitting on a knife edge
Tipping the balance of power
It’s a cliffhanger
It’s too close to call
Behind closed doors
In smoke filled rooms
They’ll make their deals
Behind closed doors
Tipping the balance of poor
It’s too close to call
too close to call
It’s too close to call

I Am In Love

I am in love
With a woman sweet and kind
She’s in my dreams
And she’s always on my mind
I am in love
With a woman so fine
She serves me grapes
And she pours me sweet wine

And when she gets here
I wanna tell her
That I wanna hold her tight
I wanna touch her
Wanna love her every night

I am in love
With a woman sweet and kind
She’s in my dreams
And she’s always on my mind
I am in love
With a woman so fine
She serves me grapes
And she pours me sweet wine

And if I go away
I know she’ll be here
When I get back home
And I will tell her
I will give her all my love

I am in love
With a woman sweet and kind
She’s in my dreams
And she’s always on my mind
I am in love
With a woman so fine
She serves me grapes
And she pours me sweet wine

And if I get it wrong
I want to fix it wah
I wana make it right
I wanna feel
Wanna love her
Never fight

I am in love
With a woman sweet and kind
She’s in my dreams
And she’s always on my mind
I am in love
With a woman so fine
She serves me grapes
And she pours me her sweet wine

Stagefright

no point in pretending
it wont go away
like a monkey on your shoulder
its here to stay

you know you cant just run away
an actor moves to centre stage
the words are written on the page
and you dont know which part to play

whats the point in burning effigies
if they wont go up on the fire
lets pour more petrol on your bleeding wounds
and build a bigger funeral pyre

you know you cant just run away
an actor moves to centre stage
the words are written on the page
and you dont know which part to play
a man at the back
shouts
anarchy
the house erupts
the lion roars
they are queueing up to eat the canapes
and someones shouting out for more

Boom!

Hey you’re going through the motions
Accelerating through the days
Lost control of your emotions
Your mind and body can’t keep pace
Caffeine’s racing through your bloodstream
Fuel injection for your brain
Thoughts go faster than an instant
Planting seeds that soon will explode

Boom!
Boom!
Boom!

You are still only a caveman
You haven’t had time to evolve
The clock is ticking
The clock is ticking
And it’s leaving you behind
Your only instinct is survival
Everything is fight or flight
Someone lit the blue touch paper
Planting seeds that will soon explode

Boom!
Boom!
Boom!
Maybe you can find a corner
Somewhere that you can lick your wounds
But you can’t rid your imagination
Of all your ghosts and gods and all your demons
And all your demons!
And all your thoughts
Are in collision
Random dreams in juxtaposition
Fighting for your attention
Who to believe in
Who to believe in
Someone lit the blue touch paper
Planting seeds that will soon explode

Boom!
Boom!
Boom!
Boom!

A Song for Geir

Across the sea
Beneath the stars
Among the trees
Beyond the clouds
Beside the fjords
He’s hard at work
Writing songs
For us to hear
Playing tunes
To move us to our soul
To move us to our soul

Across his lap
And in his hands
From deep within
From somewhere else
A voice so warm
That it must come from his boots
And it takes us in his arms
And holds us
Spellbound

Across the sea
Beneath the stars
Among the trees
Beyond the clouds
Beside the fjords
He’s hard at work
Writing songs
For us to hear……………
Writing songs
For us to hear……..
