Title: Gin...
Post by: Groundy on October 29, 2017, 11:26:33 AM
Many years ago Gin was my drink, mainly as a long drink with tonic, however I changed to whisky quite some time ago, Lately I see new types of Gin advertised, next week Aldi have about 10 different types of Gin, from £20,
I was just wondering if anyone had tried any, I don't mind spending £35 plus on a bottle of Laphroig but I am not sure about spending that on a bottle of Gin that might taste the same as a bottle of Gordon's.
Thanks in advance...
Alex

So the Bombay Sapphire factory is around 10 miles away from my house :-) (Whitchurch) Its always been my favourite gin, so I was suprised that its made down the road, and not in deepest India - you can book tours and all that.

If you haven't tried it - I would recommend it, I prefer it to Gordons :-)

I'm not a Gin drinker Alex...at least not since I was 16 when I drank too much of it and spent the next two days recuperating  ::). I do keep a bottle Tanqueray handy for friends that stop by. I'm not familiar with Aldi Gin but here's a link I found about it.

My bar bill has increased substantially since mrs rottenhead started on the gin. Drinks violet flavoured gin with tonic and Prosecco a tenner a glass. Also she has her eyes on all the new flavoured ones in Lidl. Whilst I'm hooked on the innes & Gunn craft lager, brewed in Edinburgh that Lidl now stock.

Cheers, Bruno, Farrell and James, A tenner a glass, WOW.
I will have to try them out, probably at Christmas.

Tanqueray Rangpur is my fave at the moment.  It is a bit Bombay Saphire-ish but slightly more citrus.  I can't imagine it has seen much of India either, though I'm not sure that matters much.

Don't be tempted to buy cheap tonic though. Fever Tree is worth the expense.

One of the Aldi gins, Oliver Cromwell, at £9.99 was recently voted one of the world's best gins. I have tried a bottle and it was nice. My recent favourite is Hortus gin from Lidl.. about £14.99 a bottle but again it's had a lot of favourable reviews.  I begrudge paying a lot for spirits as I drink them too quickly ! At those prices they're worth a try if you're dipping your toe in to the world of gin again.

I drink a variety of drinks, depending on what I feel like, but gin does very much seem to be the 'in' drink at the moment.

Bombay refers to the method of distillation.

After getting 8 bottles of Whiskey for my Birthday I thought I would leave the Gin drinking for a couple of weeks or so.

We drink here Gin Long Drink (alc vol 5.5%). It is a mix of gin and grapefruit soda. So, you can make it by yourself; a little bit of gin and add grapefruit soda. We had it at NordicMet, but I can't remember did our guests like it... :-\
