NeilFest 2009 Index

Well in the spirit of NY, I offer you this very stripped down version of Thrasher (the way Neil recorded it himself).  I was inspired by Flash Harry and Nigel, who were getting stripped down today with their posts, and I realized that if I was going to get another song done I would have to just record it in one go, there is just no time for fussing around!  So, I strapped on my acoustic and hit record on the microBR and played and sang in one go (used the roland mini condenser mic).  I then overdubbed the harmonica in a second go.  Thats it, no layers, no effects, nothing but me naked and singing one of my favorite songs of all time, of any artist, period.  I feel chilly now, I better put my clothes back on, enjoy "naked Thrasher".

I agree with Geir - the vox just keep getting better and better, bro!! I have complete respect for the acoustic playing as well - perfect timing, tempo and the tone was captured - sounds expensive, so please don't tell me you bought it for 50 bucks at a pawn shop..

Thanks Wiley and all the other great comments about my vocals on this one!!!.  I am really having a blast doing some of these great NY songs, they seem to suit my voice, although I don't make any attempt to sing like NY, I usually sing in a lower key for one thing (this song was sung one key higher by NY for example, in D, I did it in C), I just try to sing as well as I can as myself.  As Nigel said in another post, Ian Curtis does Neil Young, I love that comment.  Thanks for the nice words about my voice everybody, I can always use a confidencde boost in that department.  I was truly inspired on this one, at about 9:00 pm, I literly turned on the machine and hit record and went for it, one take, added harmonica and was done, mastered and posted.  I looked out the window and noticed the full moon and felt like I was on top of the world.  It turned out very well, I am sorta surprised by how well it turned out.  Thanks everybody, this Neilfest has turned out to be pretty special for me for sure.  Making great music, and listening to all the other great music, priceless!!! Long live Neil Young!!

This is great, BB. Really beautiful playing. I don't know this NY song, but it's a great one based on your version of it. The acoustic-only feel works perfectly, and allows the notes to show through nicely. It's definitely the sound of a great guitarist enjoying himself! Excellent.

Oh this is good. This created tingles up the old spine. Your vox have really opened up here and you have a nice relaxed feel. Less intense than your usual vox and it really works here. The guitar is just lovely, beautifully played and recorded and that little bit of harp is great. I love the little harp intro at the begiining.

Nakedness suits you, and I mean that in a musical sense. Excellent post.

Cheers,

Nigel

Of all my Neilfest songs this is the one I am most proud of.  I am still amazed I was able to do this in one take, that was a great night, I was riding high that night.
