NeilFest 2009 Index

Well I took the stripped down version of this song (Powderfinger) Nigel posted in the Colabs section asking for anybody to add to it.  I really love this version of this song and it is getting into my head big time.  I had to add some Harmonica and guitar to this.  This is the way I heard this in my head, It felt like it needed a bit of electric guitar.  I originally was going to add acoustic, but the strat seeded to fit better (in my head anyway).  Hope you enjoy what I have added Nigel, this is such a great job you have done here.

Wow, I love it!!! Thanks very much for doing this. I love the harp but for me the surprise is the strat. The strat parts work well, but especially like the part you play in the right channel, it works well and gives the song a different feel, almost a country-ish edge. That really suits the theme of the song for me. I think the solo works really well - it's strong without being over heavy. Echoes of some of the NY version there without aping it. Lovely. And the harp is great throughout - that's what I imagined, it works particularly well on the last verse.

Brilliant!

Cheers,

Nigel

Wow, don't know how I missed this - great stuff! I, too, think the strat part is the ace here as well. Great harp playing, too (No surprise there  Smiley).

Very impressed with all your productions. A big contributor to the Neilfest you are!!

This song is just wonderful. Even before anything was added.  The type of song that just pulls you in.  Was thinking about adding, but no need now this is just perfect.

Most of the credit for this one goes to Nigel, his base track was so strong and it just really got inside me big time, I just kept listening and then I became full on inspired.  I grabbed my harmonica and strat and laid it all down very quickly, no time to think, jut play.  It was Nigels track that guided my playing, I just let er go.  I am so glad you all like this, I am especially glad Nigel likes what I have added to his wonderful base track.  That is what this place is all about, getting inspired from each other and producing music we wouldn't have done without that inspiration.

Sounds like you guys are playing together down at the local coffeehouse. Nice job with the guitars and harp.  I liked it when the vocal harmony came in.  Maybe the vocals could come up a little in the mix...

Thanks Hooper, appreciate the feedback. If you get the time, could you take a listen to the other versions and let me know what you think of the mixes, especially the original "stripped down" version? I use a different mastering effect on the stripped down version and I knwo Wiley felt the vox were stronger on that one. I may try a bit of remxing.

Cheers,

Nigel

Hey Nigel, for comparison purposes of the mixes.  With this one I took your "stripped down" version from here (the way you mastered it), added my parts and re-mastered it with "live mix".  I always find live mix opens up the soundscape for some reason.  I have never looked into what it is doing exactly, but is seems to bring up the level or clarity on the sounds panned right and left and bring down the stuff panned in the middle.   Something like that.

Live mix is nice, always adds a vibrant feel. On my full version I used Mix Down, and the original was just Soft Comp. I think each has a slightly different feel, I'd be interested to see if Hooper feels the vocal balance is different across the versions. I'm too close to them to tell now!

Cheers,

Nigel
