NeilFest 2009 Index
I think the Vampires have gone to bed, so it's safe now... This was chopped and lowered to fit the forum, but anything for the 'fest, right? All done with the MBR - 32 tracks with bounces and there ain't no more. Had to master over another bounce to finish. Not happy with a lot of things, but it's done. Edited out the drunk talkPeace, Mark

Mark, I can't believe you tackled this one!!!!! Holy sh*t man that is my favorite of all the heavy electric ones. Great job. Your vocals are great, bring them up a bit more in the mix next time. I love this version, your guitar sounds really heavy and perfect. You have surprised me, big time. Great version!!!! Long live Neil Young! I am so glad you have put this one up, this is going in my Ipod for sure. |

I had never heard this one. I had to go and find it somewhere...... Great job! It's always nice to be introduced to new stuff, and this is such a good way to discover it. Love it Mark. |

Thanks for the comments, guys!! A lot of people who commented had never heard this song before - glad to have offered something new as many of you have helped me fill my hard drive with incredible material that I never would have known! If some intergalactic army took over the planet and forced me to keep only one Neil Young album, it would definitely be Zuma. Facemask93, I am just starting to figure this thing out myself and try to learn some lesson while making a song. A huge milestone for me on this one, was to take AndyR's advice in this post regarding mixing the guitar with your vocals (#3 on his list where he commented). http://songcrafters.org/community/micro-br/how-to-edit-vocals-well/0/Because of time permitting and I'll take any good take I can get , instead of premastering everything first, I just dropped the Bass some and Mid a little on the guitar patch preamps and kept the tone settings bright on the guitar itself. This kept over 8 tracks of guitar (Not all at the same time of course) from muddying up the song. A HUGE tip for me - Thanks AndyR!! But I'll tell you, facemask, if I could play and sing the way you do, I'd really just hit the record button and that's it!! Thanks all!! Mark |

If some intergalactic army took over the planet and forced me to keep only one Neil Young album, it would definitely be Zuma. I feel the same way Mark. Zuma is my favorite also, but it is tough choice for sure, just something about the attitude, the hard rocking songs and tender acoustic stuff mixed, the incredible recording by David Briggs (his finest hour?), the humour and light on this album compared to the darkness on the last 3, all add up to the one I listen to the most (I still love "Tonights The Night" and "On the Beach" also even though they are dark as hell), mostly I love the way he plays guitar on Zuma, some of his best recorded solos of all time are on that album. You have good taste in my books Mark. And you did real good recording your version, I will have to re-read that AndyR post again with all the recording tips in it! |

Excellent job, really like what you have done with the production here. Andy's advice is really good, and you've put it to good use here. Lots of different guitar sounds that all work very well together, a clever production indeed.
BTW, 32 tracks is just the starting point. There is no limit to how many you have. Just back up to the PC once you start deleting earlier bounces. My full version of Powderfinger used 40 tracks, and that's quite a straightforward song!
Cheers,
Nigel |
