NeilFest 2009 Index
This song from Neil Young's "Harvest" album has been very close to my heart for a long time, it's very personal to me and very true. Recorded it in one take. Messed around with Pitch Correction on my voice, but decided against it; it's not true to the song and it sounds "flanged" Guitar: Seagull. Mixed piezo pickup and Shure SM58 @ 30cm. I used a dynamic mike for the vocals as well; I don't like the sound of the built-in mikes. "The Needle and the Damage Done"

Perfect job there. I love early Neil Young. What kind of mic did you use, your voice sounds very natural and live, very nice. Great guitar playing. I love playing this one on my Seagull also (but not as good as you). Please tell me how you recorded your seagull, I am struggling to get a good recorded sound with my seagull plugged in like you have done. |

... Please tell me how you recorded your seagull, I am struggling to get a good recorded sound with my seagull plugged in like you have done.
sorry missed this one. I used a simple dynamic mic (the Shure) at about 30cm (1ft) from the hole. Mixed that with the plug-in and voila. Tweak to taste. Don't overdo the low EQ on the pickup (it booms). For this song I chose a bit of a "dark" mix, but a bit of high EQ could brighten it up. btw I don't play with plectrum. That makes it harder to get a punchy attack and bright sparkly sound, but I sacrifice that to get better volume/dynamic control. I bought the Seagull because it's one of the best sounding "soft-playing" acoustics I've come across. |

Brilliant. Harvest is in my top 3 all-time albums, and this is a perfect rendition. Plus an absolutely gorgeous tone on the guitar.
I'm thinking of doing 'Old Man' one of these days (to add to my live favourite 'Heart of Gold'). Hell... we could do the whole album as a kind of forum tribute, lol |
